Indianapolis is not a bad drive from Bham either, about 6 hours up 65. Went to the '97 Final Four up there. The city itself isn't exactly a ton of fun.

I know. After years of suffering through Gottfried and all the others, it's so nice to have a real basketball coach.

I think Avery is the only coach we have had recently who truly didn't have a clue how to run a program. Which is ironic considering he also has our only NCAA tournament win in the past 15 years. Gottfried knew how to cheat without drawing NCAA attention and built some stacked rosters, but was so totally inept at coaching defense that once he got lazy post-Elite Eight run and the recruiting slipped a little he was done. Grant knew how to coach defense but the offense was a train wreck and he was a poor recruiter by P-6 standards, so he always ended up finishing second for his top targets and left scholarships unused or pursued lower tier mid-major caliber players as backup options. Oats is just a really good coach in general. Avery though? Basically all he did was not frick up the work Pett did with Sexton, Petty, Herb, and Kira. Otherwise he was pretty much a disaster. But at least we got to pay him millions of dollars to ensure his son could have a P-6 college basketball career.
