Yeah, against good defensive teams, seems our offense will be as good as our % of finishing contested layups -- aside from games where a Petty or Primo et al goes 6-9 from 3pt range.
Kentucky, Mizzou, Miss St, Oklahoma have coaches that emphasize defense and a lot of athletic defenders who can block/alter "forced" layups as well as close off "kick out" passing lanes.
No surprise that we struggle to finish at the rim against them. This was always a concern with this team going into the season.
Herb has been a lot better than expected but still has issues with getting caught in "no man's land" on his drives. He's still the obvious guy to get the ball when you have to get a basket. If we have to choose one, since our strength is depth of 9+ guys that can all score 20 against anyone but we do lack a single "go-to" offensive player that's going to usually get the benefit of the referee's doubt.
Regarding layups in general, a couple of times during our SEC games, commentators have put up a graphic that is supposedly Oats' minimum for conversion percentages on offense that sets 50% (or 1 point per drive/finish) for layups/shots at rim.
The 1 point per layup struck me as kind of low but really emphasizes the overall value he sees in quickly forcing action at the rim.

I still think our boosters should have sent Dodge Chargers to every player on that Norfolk State team.

I am so happy that Oats is our coach. The turnround from the last year under Avery to this year is astounding.

I agree, however our offense looks like Avery right now... the defense is amazing though. I think offensively we will be better off with everyone healthy. Just a slump offensively and every team has those every year.

One thing that I have noticed about Quinnerly after rewatching things is that his only effective lay up is the uncontested breakaway style where the angle and trajectory is low. When it comes to having to elevate or get high off of the glass he has no shot at all. So essentially the way to defense him is to simply cut him off, put your hands up to stop an easy lay in and force him to have to go over you.
Not to crap on the guy, as he is a division 1 athlete and is one of our guys, but he has zero clue what he is doing when he tries to shoot a runner over defenders. It is simply, throw the ball up towards the back board and pray for a miracle.

I think we should all take this time to take a deep breath and give thanks for the true heroes
Let us not forget the Heroics of Derrick Jamerson Jr. who on a bad ankle came in and destroyed us. Hell, we should build him a statue beside Saban. God Bless Him.

Looking ahead at our schedule, and I was pretty surprised to see that Georgia is 5-6 in conference (and 12-6 overall).
They’re even won 3 straight.
I was expecting worse.
They do go to UT on Wednesday so it PROBABLY won’t hit 4 straight, but the Vols have surprised me before this year.

I said this last week. These other teams know how to play us now. If you cant dribble drive in this offense, you are easy to guard. This isnt just about a slump. Primo should be replaced by Ellis because he isnt as good of an all around player. Primo might be the best shooter on the team, but he is easy to guard. The defender just has to stand there with him. Petty has the same problem, but he is more aggressive than Primo. Ellis needs to be on the court 75% of the time. And Gary needs to be on the court more too. Both of those are getting better with playing time. The only screens we do are for the point guard, so unless we change that, I dont see why Primo should play until he grows into this game. He is basically a high school kid. And, we need to sink or swim with Quinnerly at point. He made some nice plays at the end that should have won the game. I dont get playing Herb at point. Just bad results.

Baylor's next three games (through Feb 18) are now postponed, per Dennis Dodd.
