We were turning the ball over a lot. Think Oats felt better slowing down to cut down on that.

I think it’s really more important that we’re able to be effective on drives to the basket. I interpreted those statistics to mean UK and State gave use problems because we weren’t effective in the lane and off the dribble. They had big, long, athletic bigs that defended drives and closed up outside passing options. It’s a bit of a domino effect in our offense. If we aren’t successful inside and at the rim, the shooters aren’t getting as many good looks.

Agree completely. Summer Of George's post about Kentucky and Miss St's defenses definitely puts stats behind what we've witnessed.

After Cal called the early TO and Kentucky settled down defensively, they were doing a great job of staying in front of the driver and using active hands to deflect passes. When that happens, Quinerly, Herb et al have a tendency to force the drive and leave their feet without a clear passing lane or "out pass".

I think some of that is Oat's philosophy to "push the drive at almost all costs" which makes the driver's decision making process more difficult when teams actually have enough defenders to avoid bad mismatches and the length to get their hands in passing lanes. (One reason Oats' offense, that seems simple in many regards, takes a while to run efficiently).

Kentucky and Miss St were replays of what Clemson and Stanford were able to do. The huge positive was our ability to grit our teeth defensively and "grind" out wins even though they dictated the style of play.

Fortunately, as Summer Of George's post highlights, there's not a lot of teams that can do what Clemson, Kentucky, Miss St can.

When we face others that can though, Oats has some work to do.

Since these are the same teams where we have to fight a lot harder to secure the defensive rebound, they can also limit the number of chances to push the ball after a rebound and get the looks we want before the defense is organized, our bread and butter.

Maybe some quicker movement/screens around the perimeter to get defenders moving before the drive?

That was my initial thought, because it felt like we weren't even making them work defensively a lot of the time. We started setting high ball screens in the last 5 minutes and it seemed to help us get the gears moving and make them at least make decisions on help/switch and everything, which then got us passing and moving again. And it led to some wider drive lanes and a couple of 3 pt looks.

Once Herb/Petty came back out with 3 and some change on clock you could tell UK was in trouble. Cal made a good timeout because it felt Bama was about to run away with it.

We absolutely smothered them defensively the last 5 minutes. I think the Ellis strip that led to a score on the other end with like 3 mins left in a tie game was the play of the ballgame.

Herb gets a lot assists with his feet not moving, just being patient then boom quick pass and score. Some of the young guys could learn from him.

Good point. I wonder if Oats will try to get some of those screens going sooner in the possession --secondary break even -- against the next team that's able to bog us down.

Kentucky was doing a lot of little things that, watching us all season, you notice are really slowing us down. For example, we often get the secondary break started by a long outlet pass to usually Shack or Primo on the wing. Kentucky was all over that and you could tell defender was coached to force him to sideline and keep him from quickly passing back centrally.

All in all though fantastic for Oats to get so much video of things to work on without suffering a L for it.

Yep, best combo possible. Confidence in winning a tough game and a lot to watch and learn from.

Guy has a well laid out professional looking board, and the right side as you look at it is as poorly cut as you can get. LOL.

Not hating just noting.

I associate it with the Mikes. It's very late 90s/early 00s in terms of design. Not old enough to be retro or interesting and not modern enough to be cool.

Bill Curry? Why would it remind you of him? It wasn't introduced until the late 90's, I think. Pretty sure it was a product of a bunch of logo redesigns under Bockrath. They were all terrible.

I think we have a good shot at a 1 seed if we beat Oklahoma. I’m not seeing enough offense in the SEC for anyone to outright beat us. State, Missouri, and Auburn have the best chances, but we will play hard vs AU and Missouri and State just don’t have the offense to keep up I think
