I'd need a mighty long fuse to light that keg.

The only thing about tonight that surprised me a little was how poorly we shot from behind the arc. As much as work on it, I expected a little better but it’s been a long time since these guys played a live game so I can understand it. The defense was better, effort was great, and the offense was adequate for the opponent. If we can improve from here, I think we’ll be just fine.

I just read through this entire thread from when the game started until it ended and I laughed at every other post

Thought we looked good for the most part. Saw some really good things from the new guys too which was nice. When you have a bad shooting night, you score 81, and win by 24 it’s hard to really complain

My thoughts:(Long)
Q, Rojas- very, very good. Q looks like he can slide in right where Kira left off. Rojas is more skilled offensively than I thought he would be and I love his motor

Petty- Kind of off night but we’ve watched him for four years and know what we’re gonna get. He will have nights he can’t miss and have nights he’s off. Good to get a so-so night out of the way against Jax St.

Shack- kid is gonna be a superstar. I think he’s the best player on the team.

Bruner- my biggest disappointment of the night Maybe disappointment is too strong, more like underwhelming. But it’s only one game and he was playing in a new system with new guys. I do have to wonder if his game really fits Oats style. We’ll see.

Herb- Love Herb. Love his effort and defense. But he shoots too much. That may be an unpopular opinion but he does. He’s not great offensively and some of those shots should go to others. But he does everything else outstanding. Heart and soul of the team.

Primo/Ellis - You can see the skill set is there. Primo is really, really raw though. Ellis looked good but I thought I read here how great of a shooter he was. Did he even attempt a shot?

Reese/KAH/Gary/Miles - Have to wonder how many minutes this bunch gets going forward. I’d almost like to see Gary get Reese’s minutes. I think he has potential. I don’t know how much more of Reese that Oats need to see.

Overall. - Loved the effort and hustle, going to be a fun team to watch. Have to shoot better but we will. Rotations need to get ironed out. I know it was Jax St., and I know he wanted to see some guys but that first half was a Chinese fire drill. I also think that may have contributed to the poor shooting. Hard to get in a groove with so much in and out.

Without a doubt should be a tournament team. Maybe Sweet 16 if things break right. For those complaining about all the 3’s, have you watched any basketball lately? Yes it’s Oats system but it’s also analytics. Every team both college and professional is shooting a ton more threes these days. I think we will know more after next week against better competition. I thought Jax St. was terrible.

Agree with a lot of that. Only real exception is I didn’t think Primo looked raw - I just thought he took a few bad shots.

To me he jumped off the screen as one of our most skilled guys already. Probably one of our top two ball handlers right now. I think his playing time quickly jumps up, unless he’s just not doing what Oats wants him to (taking terrible shots, not playing defense, etc.).

Ellis looks to have defensive and playmaking potential, but he was just very timid on offense. I don’t know if that was first game jitters or what, but we are absolutely going to need his minutes and I can’t imagine that Oats wouldn’t encourage him to shoot the ball.

Potential looks to be there with both guys. Ellis blocked two shots on a series of possessions in the first half, which is just not something you do unless you’re long and athletic.

I thought Bruner did some smart and effective things, and he’ll probably be a glue type guy for us, but he was not overwhelming. He’s also just really awkward (my back starts to hurt every time I watch him run), which is going to take some getting used to.

Anyone at the game last night?

I thought about driving from B'ham last minute but could only buy tickets in even numbers - and we only needed 3. Cheapest seat was around $80.

Crowd was very small (looked much less than 20%) from what I saw on TV.

Just to reiterate what others have said, JQ is the real deal. I was a bit concerned about the hype for him, but he met it and will have a great season.

Of the new guys, I loved Rojas’s aggressiveness on offense, Ellis’s on ball d, and Primo’s smoothness in all he does.

Oh, and everybody seems to sleep on Shack. The dude is a gamer who can’t stop quietly scoring.

Fingers crossed, this may finally be the season where we aren’t a bubble team.

Great win last night fellas. We looked rusty, but that's expected. Bruner made some underrated plays underneath last night that is going to pay dividends for our backcourr. Rojas is a fricking tank.

Also read through the thread to see you guys thoughts. This has to be the most random thought of the thread:

I was at the game. It was setup great to keep everyone socially distanced seat wise as they had ropes covering all unavailable seats. It was great to be there but it’s going to be impossible to have any home court advantage because unless all 2,300 folks are students, people aren’t going to be loud and make much noise.

My thoughts: thank goodness I was at the game because I forgot how miserable game threads are

JQ: He’s everything we need him to be and that was evident early on. Great news for us.

Shack and JP: Both had mediocre nights offensively yet still put up solid numbers by the end of the night. The offense will be scary on nights we get hot.

Herb: It was great to see him hit a 3 and his free throw attempts just looked better. He still sucked at finishing near the rim and for the love of god we have got to stop him going one on one out control and flinging a shot at the rim. That’s got to be our lowest percentage play.

Bruner: Off night shooting wise for him but he’s the perfect big for our system and we are lucky he’s here. He needs to be more aggressive defensively getting rebounds though because at times he was caught watching.

Reese: He was butt on both ends of the court. I always hope he’ll be better than what he is but unless his line drive 3s are on, he’s not much of an asset. I’ll be interested to see his playing time by SEC play.

Ellis: Great defensively and had nice handles. Not sure why he didn’t shoot a couple of his open 3s but I really liked his game.

Rojas: He’s a tank and his game was not what I was expecting. He can bully folks to the rim but as teams watch tape, they’ll start flopping when he lowers his shoulder on his drives to the basket. He’s better than what I anticipated.

Primo: You can tell the talent is there, he’s just gotta get comfortable at this level. Oats coached him more than anyone which makes me think he knows we’ll need Primo in our core group to reach our goals. He had nice handles and a really nice looking shot...he just needs to take better shots.

KAH: I felt bad for him on defense having to guard the 5 as that was a huge weight disadvantage but he battled. I don’t see him getting important minutes but if this guy is #10 off the bench, you’ve got a good team.

Miles and Gary: Glad to see them get a couple minutes. Not sure much else can be taken from that.

All in all, we’ll have to look a ton better to beat Stanford but a 24 point win (and cover) is nothing too shabby. Petty had to wear a back brace looking thing when he wasn’t playing so hopefully this won’t be a nagging injury. When we are hitting 3s, we are going to be like that Auburn team from a couple years ago where close games turn to demoralizing leads in a matter of possessions.

Did Herb not have 12 rebounds unless I misread the stats? If correct this cannot be overlooked. I have seen us get killed on the boards with rebounds and put backs by the other team many times and it was the biggest factor that cost us the game.

Thoughts on last night:

JQ can play. My big question was if his freshman year was evidence of a recruiting misevaluation or evidence of a kid who just wasn't comfortable or happy where he was. Obviously it was the latter. He's not the baseline to baseline speed merchant that Sexton or Kira were but his first step might be quicker than either of theirs, his handle is elite, and he can shoot from NBA range. We are in good hands I think.

The defense appeared much improved. Yes it was JSU and they just don't have the kind of players who are going to hurt a long, athletic team like ours but everyone was hustling, we weren't constantly fricking up switches, and Reese was really the only guy who I saw lose his man in transition. We made them work hard for 40 minutes.

As far as the newcomers go, Primo is slick. He just needs to adjust to the speed of the college game. Ellis needs to just let it rip on offense. He passed up a few open looks for no reason. He was really active and aggressive on defense though, and I'm sure the offense will come in time. I was more impressed with Bruner than some of y'all I think. He didn't show up a lot on the stat sheet, but I thought he did a good job of spacing the floor and playing help defense. He's a glue guy, not a feature player. He will have some big games, but not every night. Expecting more than that is just going to let you down. Glue guys like him and Rojas are all we need in the front court though.

Speaking of Rojas...wouldn't it have been nice to have him last year? Nothing about his game makes much sense, but like others have said he looks like that typical mid-major forward who is a bit undersized, but is sneaky athletic, can shoot a bit from outside, and always kills us.

Herb's shot looked...not bad. He's still a disaster around the basket, but if he can start to make a couple of 3s every night we are in business.

Shack looked even better than last year. He got stronger, faster, and more comfortable in traffic.

Petty was off from outside last night and still scored 14. Getting that from him when his shot isn't falling is huge.

Overall, if we can score 81 on anybody, even JSU, while being ice fricking cold from outside all night we are going to boat race several teams this year. If this team has a really hot night from outside (like 14-29 or something) they're going to straight up embarrass some opponents. We were taking good shots, took care of the ball, and hustled on defense for 40 minutes. I think we are going to take the next step this year, but we will know more in a couple of weeks after we have faced some legit competition.

He did and Shack actually had 11 which is incredible.

Could not agree more. His help defense is elite and you can tell his basketball IQ is way up there. He is going to do so many important things to help the team that won't show up in a box score and that the average fan most likely won't even notice.

Love how many true, deep love of Alabama basketball folks we have on this board and in this thread.

All the thoughts have been great to read. Looking forward to seeing where we are as a team Monday.

Agree re: Bruner - just his ability to flash on high picks and effectively play rolls was huge. Our defensive ability this year is really exciting. The pure ability to guard one on one and to recover for others mistakes is light years better than last year.

Hey did y’all see Darius Miles stroke that mid range Jumper with ease? I know Nate HATES that shot but that stroke on Miles looked Nice.

Miles is gonna be a solid player in the next few years
