Screw Alabama basketball. Could’ve been a heck of a day for Alabama athletics.

Of course Furman loses by 16 to Winthrop after looking so good the other night.

Aw hell -you've done it now. I posted the following after the 3 pt Furman win and got called out:

The fact that we "NEED" him (this was talking about Petty) against a Furman is troubling in itself.

Hey, Furman is a good basketball team. They returned almost everyone from a group that won 25 games last year. They have definite 12/5 upset potential this year.

My reply:

25 games in the Southern Conference and lost to Wofford in the first round of their tournament. But they did beat Columbia International and Elon University so there's that. Let's face it, we never expect to be trailing a Southern Conference team AT HOME by 16 at any point in the game and that is the problem.

And this is the reply I got from a different poster:

Furman won at Villanova 2 years ago

They're a legitimate mid major. "Almost" losing to them is not an embarrassment. The way we played in the 1st half was an embarrassment.

It’s so great to have a dominant Football team and Women’s Basketball team to get behind!!!

Jordan Bruner just hit himself in the balls in frustration for giving up a foul.

What. the.

I remember seeing him in pain at one point and thought he had hurt his hand/wrist and then read this and cracked up. I just went back to see what happened and it actually looks like the WKY player kicked in him in the cods accidentally and it was a late reaction.

And I mean at some point we have to accept we just aren’t very good. We’ve played 5 decent teams, Stanford, Providence, Clemson, Furman, and WKU. And those, outside of maybe Clemson, aren’t top 25 teams, just decent teams. We are 2-3 against that group. And could easily be 1–4 the way we played the first half against Furman. Maybe we get better as the season goes along and maybe you could argue we should be better than we are. But we just aren’t very good right now.

Coach Oat's comments after WKU game LINK

I found his comment interesting about not having enough minutes for all the players coming into the season but now, 7 games in, struggling to find enough guys to play both sides of the ball.

Took some time to post after the loss.

I said before theseason that expectations were tooo high. None of us had seen all these great players we were bringing in. Now, we have.

Gary played well against Furman but not much vs WKU. Why? Reese played but he should never be on the floor.

Maybe if Pettey quite styling and got that lock of hair out of his eyes he would do better. Who knows? He can't shoot a contested shot and everybody we play knows it.. So does the NBA.

If Oats system is to penetrate and kick out, why does nobody do it?

We have very few if any that can consistently beat their man off the dribble.

Yeah this is the big question going forward for me. As disappointing as the season is so far, I'm still trying to be optimistic about Oats and realize a lot of good coaches take a few years to get rolling and new players --even older ones -- can take almost a 1/2 season to fit in.

However, the most disappointing thing so far is that while last season a lot of issues were trying to adjust to Oats' fast paced system (turnovers etc), this season we look like we have little idea what we're even trying to accomplish.

I'm also a strong proponent of the theory that good shooters shoot in ratio to their comfort level in the offense. So, I'm inclined to say the bad shooting is because of discomfort in the offense.

Of course Oats has some top players with "holes" in their games (Petty dribble driving, Herb finishing & not being a natural point guard etc).... But, this is almost always going to be the case in college ball.

They're still good players that I can't help but feel would be getting quality minutes for almost anyone. Right now, they don't look particularly well coached.

I still can’t believe Herb had a wide open layup and didn’t even hit the fricking rim.

I just do not see how Oat's system could ever work with Jones playing point guard. Obviously JQ cant play defense and neither can Shack. Reese and Petty cant throw it into the ocean, but its not the first time they have started the season in a slump. But, the good news is, it will be the last time.

I honestly think some guys need to be benched for a few games. The attitude seems too have changed with a couple of older guys since Kira left. I love herb!

One more thing. I question our Basketball IQ every time I watch us:
1) Attempt a fast break with numbers and it almost never ends well.
2) Attempt a horrible no-look pass in the middle of the lane that ends up squarely in the gut of the defender for yet another turnover. Maybe we should look at the receiver and get good at actually passing the rock before attempting the no-look variety.
3) Watch Herb drive in like a mad man, when in reality, he is probably the worst finisher around the rim(while defended) on the team, and that is saying something! LOL

Just some observations.....I'll hang up and listen

If you can't get to the rim/score, why would a defender help and leave a man open at the 3 line?
