Now that is really interesting
Get me a 7'2 center who hasn't put on tons of bad weight and has some real skill. No Tacko Fall in an Oats system.

What people hear is the Gross Revenue these Athletic Departments are bring in and its not the net income (loss). People think they are just swimming in cash and its not true. These universities are spending a ton of money on these poor athletes that "dont get any money".

Really trying to sell me on something that is simply not true. These universities are spending money that they would not earn without these athletes. But this isn't the thread for that.

If Leon Douglas, TR Dunn, Charles Cleveland, et al. were playing in their prime for the Tusc YMCA I would never go. OTOH, if 13 nondescripts were playing in Coleman with Alabama across the front I would be there. What most don't realize is that it's not the individual players that most college fans come to see, it's the University of X that they come to see. The reason I care about Reggie King, Robert Horry or Mo Williams is because they played for Alabama.

All NBA developmental league teams would probably beat the NCAA NC each year, but who cares about the South Bay Lakers or the Maine Red Claws (I had to look them up since I didn't know the name of even one team). Few go to see them and a tiny number of games are televised because no one cares. No one cares because they don't have Alabama, LSU, et al on their jersey.

The stage that the universities and NCAA have provided is far more important than the players. I care about watching Tua and Jonah Williams and Josh Jacobs only because they play(ed) for Alabama. I wouldn't care nearly as much about the NFL but for Alabama players.

While that is true, if all the top young basketball and football players went directly to NFL or NBA developmental teams the entire big business of college sports would shrink immensely.

There would certainly still be many fans at games but not nearly as much TV interest/money and basketball and football would be a lot closer to college baseball.

It's the entire system as a whole--colleges with the traditions and fan bases PLUS high quality players that creates the value.

Very few people had ever even heard of Zion Williamson this time last year. So, you cannot say that playing college basketball at Duke didnt make him a ton of money. Very few people in the US had ever heard of Tua before he signed with Alabama, and played at Alabama. And whats going to happen if a Zion or a Tua get paid a bunch of money while in college? How will that go over with their team mates. How does that work in the locker room? One of the Duke Bball players complained recently that he thought Zion got too much attention. How do you think he feels if Zion is getting the $ and the attention? Or, how do you stop Ala or some school from saying, hey dude, come to my school and we have a auto dealership lined up to use your name, and pay you $??? while you are on the team. If the ncaa ends up allowing paying athletes for their name, it will only come with a ton or rules and regulations, and of course more controversy. Not to mention, fans just getting sick of it all.

I get the point you're trying to make, but using Zion is a very bad example. I'm pretty sure he had millions of internet followers by the time he was 16.

The Crimson Tide is currently working toward applying for a hardship waiver for Javon Quinerly, who transferred from Villanova this summer after playing his freshman season for the Wildcats.

Quinerly, a former five-star point guard, originally planned to attend Arizona out of high school but backed out of his commitment after he was involved in an FBI probe and accused of taking money from former Arizona assistant coach Emanuel "Book" Richardson. The charges against Quinerly were dropped earlier this month after Richardson’s lawyer “made it clear” he never paid Quinerly or his family.

Quinerly did not see much action during his lone season at Villanova, averaging 3.2 points while registering just one minute of action over the team’s final eight games. The point guard claims the trial ultimately affected him and his play. Last week, Alabama head coach Nate Oats stated he felt Quinerly needed a “fresh start” in his career.

As of last week, Alabama had not yet submitted a hardship waiver. However, Oats said the university’s compliance staff was optimistic of its chances of receiving clearance once a waiver was sent out.

“Our compliance is pretty optimistic with what has transpired with him his senior year,” Oats said last week. “The family was wrongly accused, and they’ve been cleared of all that stuff. He’s got a fairly large following, and he went through a lot personally. His family went through a lot. Hopefully, the NCAA understands all that. He needs a fresh start after everything he’s been through.”

Alabama’s appeal will likely center around the second alteration of Wednesday’s new policy in which Quinerly was a “victim of egregious behavior directly impacting his or her health, safety or well-being.” While the star point guard has already been proven innocent of his previous allegations, it will be up to the NCAA to decide whether or not his hardships had a direct impact on his well-being. Quinerly will also need a statement from Villanova athletic director Mark Jackson which could help spearhead the move. Last week, Oats said Villanova was “going to support the whole thing,” stating he traded voicemails with Wildcats head coach Jay Wright.

Quinerly is on campus at Alabama and participated with the team during skill sessions last week. The 6-foot-1 sophomore has three years of eligibility remaining regardless of the NCAA’s decision on his impending hardship waiver.

"Having him and Kira (Lewis Jr.) together would be great,” Oats said. “They can both pass, dribble and shoot… Hopefully, we can get him this year. If not, I think he’s got a great mindset either way.”

Rumor is the Blackshear sweepstakes is over and it is UF and should be announced very soon. Big pickup for Mike White... I still think he is a very mediocre coach though

Yeah, Zion wasn’t the number 1 player in his class, but was easily the most famous before college.

White is killing it on the recruiting trail. Didn't he get two five stars in this recruiting cycle? 2019 that is.

Maybe basketball. Football would still be massive. The American conference title game beats the College World Series in ratings.

Those are small brands with little NFL talent, and they still got over 3 million viewers playing at the same time as Bama-UGA.

I honestly think in college football the talent level has little to do with why people watch.

In basketball, I think quality of play is important especially before March Madness. A Duke-UNC regular season is ultimately pointless, so to get people to watch you need good players.

Wonder if they can get the request in ahead of the new rules being considered or is already too late ?
