We had a crazy party like that. 1995 State regional playoffs against heavily favored St Augustine.
Bonnabel wins the game by 3 points as the clock runs out. The quarterback goes to run off the field and throws the ball straight up in the air. A St Aug player caught it and walked into the endzone while the Bonnabel players were celebrating.
The touchdown counted. Game over.
We lost after we had won.
It made ESPN bloopers of the week.

Even worse, Conway was up 35-17 in the 4th quarter. They used to be a state power and now are losing to the 3A high school in a town of barely 1,000 people.

In high school, I was involved in an ending like that. We were down by 7, 2 seconds on the clock, they had the ball on their own 20, and it was 4th down. Their coach told their QB to take the snap, run through the end zone, give us a safety, but not to stop until he reaches the locker room. About the time he crossed the goal line, the final born blew. He spiked the ball in the end zone, ran over to the fence, slid and began taunting our fans. The ball was just lying there, about 2 yards from the back of the end zone. One of our guys literally walked over and picked it up. TD! I kicked the PAT to tie the game, and we won in OT by my extra point.

That’s the game where I learned to never give up, no matter how dire the circumstances.

It's about more than not taking a knee. The coaches need to accept full responsibility here. The kid clearly did not know that the play has to end to end the game. 0:00 is not the end of the game if the ball is live. The ball is live until it's blown dead. Take the snap and run if you want, but protect the ball until the final whistle. Coaches not teaching or not knowing? Either way, inexcusable!

Dude wtf are you rambling on about? This is 1000% on that kid. Anyone who’s ever watched more than a quarter of a football game knows how it works. That QB is an idiot and should probably transfer schools

As a line judge a couple weeks ago, listening to the players on the sideline, I’d guess that half of them are unaware of basic rules like this.

I don't get why the QB didn't know to take a knee. If they have to snap the ball with 0.2 left, then the clock was stopped. Clearly the coaches and QB have to know to take a knee there. Weren't the coaches on the sideline calling the Victory formation??????

My instinct is to say that’s on the coaches, but almost every HS football player has seen College and NFL games and should know what to do there.

But when you're young and in the heat of the moment in the game sometimes the mind can draw a blank. Those coaches should have told him exactly what to do.

You can explicitly tell the players what to do and they'll still screw it up. We got the ball back with 3 seconds left before the half and specifically told the entire offense we're taking a knee. Looked at the qb and said just take a knee. His dumbbutt goes under center and spikes the damn ball. The entire offense turns at him and yells. LOL
