In 2006, the Miami Dolphins and Nick Saban had a choice to make between Drew Brees, who was recovering from a shoulder injury, and Daunte Culpepper, who was recovering from a knee injury. The Dolphins signed Culpepper and the rest is history. When Saban was on Dan LeBetard‘s radio show recently, he talked about what happened...
quote:

“We chose Drew Brees. I’ve never ever talked about this publicly,” said Saban, according to the show’s Twitter feed. “That’s the guy we made the first offer to. A lot of players know this. There was a lot of loyalty in the organization and players never talked about it.”

It’s been well known the Dolphins brought Brees in for a physical during the offseason, but it’s never been stated publicly that Miami made the now Super Bowl-winning quarterback a contract offer.

“We thought Drew Brees was an outstanding player and that’s who we made the first offer to,” Saban said, according to the Sun Sentinel “Quite frankly, you know, he didn’t pass the physical with our organization so we had to go in another direction and there was nothing any of us could do about that.”

Why is Saban suddenly talking about this? Hmmm...

Since Saban's choice was being forced by the team doctor, I can understand Brees feeling Saban was being evasive with a "firm" offer. Saban should have said at the time "We're having to settle for Culpepper!" maybe that would've motivated DC....

Pretty much what Drew Brees said in his book!

I think Nick is planting the seed. If Sean's moves on, then I think Nick would love to come to the Saints. Everything is in place for him to win a SuperBowl. I think the Saints is the only NFL team Nick would come too.

Saban has a history of lying. Who else can remember Saban saying he chose Culpepper over Brees because "you don't throw with your knee"?

Since Saban had been given the same level of control over the Fins organization as Emperor Palpatine had over the Galactic Federation, it's on him. I'm sure in his warped mind, nothing that went on at Miami could possibly be his fault. His "system" and "process" are perfect while the mere mortals he must suffer daily just screw everything up (if things don't go well). He is obviously either clandestinely interviewing for a pro job or working the angles for more money from his current employer. Either way, Saban will be Saban and Gumps gonna Gump.

Go Irish!!!

I'm sure Bree's is telling the truth because you read in on the internet....

BTW: Who makes the offers, the head coach or the general manager?

Not what Brees said. Said Saban was evasive when he asked for a firm offer or not. Made his mind up quickly to go with Sean Payton and Saints.

That's a little bit of a different story than Drew Brees tells in his book. Now, which one is more trustworthy???
