Our inability to hold the edge this season was largely due to the lack of speed at LB. I do agree with you that we win that Bama game with JDJ on the field, but going into next season with an experienced, faster Allen will undoubtedly improve the defense. JDJ doesn't lack talent, he lacks the physical traits needed to run our defense the way Kirby and Will want to run it. That's not a knock on JDJ...there are teams and schemes where he'd fit perfectly.

He's a middle linebacker. He guards the middle. Edge problems aren't on JDJ. Edge problems are .. in Kirby's words, let them have the edge so we get them running horizontally, but we won't let them do anything in the middle. That's scheme. JDJ was a starter. There's no way Kirby pushed him out because he was too slow to cover the edge. THis is moron talk.

We had issues this year with our ILBs getting reached by OL.
A lot of that is on the DL.
Some of it is on the ILB reading the play quicker.
When the ILB does not get reached, he is able to spill outside.
Usually that permits your safety/nickel defender to play aggressive and 1 gap.
Without that outside support from the ILB, your DBs are 2 gapping. And it is typically a successful offensive play (4 yards on 1st down. Half the distance on 2nd. Conversion on 3rd).
A lot of that is on the DL.
