You presume that the 85 scholarship model will remain in place. If this keeps trending towards being NFL lite and players are paid, the number of scholarships given will eventually look like the number of players on an NFL roster. Reduced scholarships to the power conference teams will hurt the 3 star player. They will in a pool scrapping for partials at programs that don’t have NIL collectives and tread water to field a program at all. This will be the deal within 5 years. The majors aren’t going to pay for 25-30 extra scholarships when they can just work the portal to sign other teams 4 and 5 star recruits that have been developed for a year or two at the major conference level.

I just watched an explanation/apology video from Radi where it basically said that Georgia had a deal in place for Caleb Downs for about 500K and Downs and his family agreed to it, and then at about 8 p.m. that night he changed his mind and toook the deal from Ohio State for a little more than 1 million.

Radi said it shocked the shite out of everybody in the football department and the NIL department and even the President's office.

Wonder if we had the opportunity to match the offer or at least come closer. This would be one of those situations I’d be ok with giving more since he’s a proven all American caliber player and has 2 years left.

If so, I'm glad we didn't. We're fine in the defensive backfield without spending a million for one player.

Good question, actually. Radi either didn't know or didn't say.

Some of the UGA beat reporters are really well-connected. All you have to do is have 3 or 4 solid sources within the program, and it can be any combination of assistant coaches, water boys, secretaries, analysts, admissions people.

I just think that Downs pulled an old switcharoo at the very last minute.

It’s pretty undeniable CFB is worse off since NIL at least imo.

NIL, in an of itself, isn't awful, imo. Kids were getting paid before, it's just out in the open now.

Now, NIL coupled with free transfers via the portal with no penalties? That's the problem. It's like free agency in pro sports but without contracts. Awful.

This place has turned real sour over a player that was never on our roster. I want a game changer/ disruptor that eats up double teams on the D line anyways not another DB or receiver. We really missed Jordan and Jalen this past season.

Agreed. That’s why I thought making a run @ Walter Nolen made some sense. I am excited to see some of the younger talent… a year later.

I have a good feeling about Jordan Hall and hopefully Jamaal Jarrett, 6'5 350 has been working hard since he's been on campus. Dawgs are deep on the dline.

NiL will be the decline of Georgia slowly if Kirby doesn't start paying what he needs. Kids these days just don't care about development. To much money being given to them.

I mean it’s not Kirby’s fault we don’t have the same pockets as some other schools. And I agree with his idea that paying some new guy, be it transfer or recruit, more than guys already on the roster, you’re going to end up with fractures in your overall culture.

Brooks Austin actually made a good point in that the Harbaugh thing has taken so long that they probably won’t be raided too badly because drop/add has ended pretty much across the country. If they want to leave they’ll have to finish out the semester and that’ll give the Michigan coaches a lot of opportunity to try to convince them to stay.

I'm curious. Does UGA not have the top rated incoming class?

Contract vs scholarship athlete is coming.

Top programs can no longer count on development for depth. You aren’t gonna keep a 2nd/3rd stringer that can get some money and start somewhere else. Your ROI on these guys is diminished.

Long term they either have to be locked in by some type contract or scholarship rules to make investing in them worth while.

how do you know what we're paying and what we "need"? Kirby has proven to be an absolute master at roster management so if he feels that paying $X amount is too much on a kid I'll go with him. It's easy to say "well we really wanted so and so, so we should've paid more" but whre does it end? Eventaully you're going to be talkign about paying kids into the milloions to the point theyr'e making more than the coahces.
