No excuse ever for throwing your own players under the bus. I can't believe he said this only a couple days before Anthony Edwards announces his decision. I would not be surprised if this quote totally turns the kid off our program:

“It’s all on me,” Crean told reporters after the game. “Because I’m the one who decided to keep these guys. And I get it, because the last thing I can do with making decisions on keeping guys in the program in the spring, is now overly get mad at them because I’m the one who made the decision. I live with that every day and it doesn’t mean that they’re not great kids. But very few programs, when there’s a takeover okay, when you guys who haven’t done it at any point really in their career, a lot of those guys move on. That’s what happens when there’s a job change. And I didn’t do that. And I’m not going to complain. And we’ve just got to do everything we can to fix it.”

I said it on page one of Kneehigh's thread and Ill say it again. Crean is a joke. I dont even give a shite about basketball but when they hired him and i listened to his interviews I knew, just like I knew about Pruitt on day one.

Pure snake oil salesman.

If you listen to his post game, he was referring to a coach transitioning period with a new coach/team. I don’t necessarily think he was nameing players specially, other than answering a question from a reporter. He’s not happy with his coaching or the performance of this team. He was quoted a few weeks ago saying “we’re not really good”... “there’s not much we can do this year”... “we’re handicapped to what we want to do/be as a team”... a lot of it was paraphrased and maybe not word for word but you get the idea. I don’t see it as a bad quote/quotes more than a standard he’s gonna develop.

When he was first hired, he’d be walking around campus and interviewing students. I thought it was strange.

It sounds like he is saying, "It's the bad players, not my great coaching." Somebody needs to teach him some manners.

How do you say things like that and then expect the athletes to take you seriously? Or does he just not give a frick? What a loser.

As I mentioned earlier, im not a huge fan of the quote but I completely understand it. It’s hard to take a lot of people’s outrage about this seriously when they’ve watched our basketball team play maybe 1 game all year. You actually follow the team so even though we disagree from time to time, I think we’re more on the same page with this.

If it costs us Edwards, I’ll be ticked off. If not, fine. Maybe it lights a fire under the team. They can’t be playing any worse.

Yeah maybe Crean is taking a page out of Mystery's playbook and just negging his team into buying in

Nothing to worry about

It was never going to be easy to replace Fox with a coach who has a system so radically different.

Plus he was left with zero point guards. Not his fault.

He should get his shot to make the team his own. Hopefully starting Monday morning. Regardless, this was never going to be easy.

We'll all be watching the new Georgia Tech coach deal with something very similar this Fall.

absolutely no excuse for saying what he said. He might be 100% true but you have to be a blithering idiot to say that publicly. I've not been impressed with Crean thus far.

He might have a system he prefers but good coaches adapt a system to their personnel.

Do you consider Kirby a good coach?

in some ways, I haven't been necessarily impressed with his ability to adapt in-game. See the LSU game and the Auburn game from last year as a reminder.

the best coaches like Gregg Popovich, Saban and Belichick build their system around their talent.

Popovich had Tim Duncan, so they were a post team then got Tony Parker and became a three and D team.

Saban has 4-5 speedy receivers right now, so they base their offense around those guys and etc.

Kirby so far is like Les Miles but an even better recruiter. Let's hope he evolves somehow in the future.

it's not a great quote, but whatever. he will be fine. i just wanna go dancing and if we get edwards tomorrow, we will have the best class we have had basically ever.

i believe in crean and this doesnt change anything. i actually don't disagree with what he's saying either. obviously, i don't think he should have said it but shite happens.

I mean, it bothers me because it shows a base misunderstanding of what he’s there to do.

He is there to be a figurehead and if need be, a sacrificial lamb. That’s why he gets payed millions of dollars. He isn’t being paid just to do things his way, he’s being paid to put up with other people’s bullshite. If he doesn’t want to do that, he’s the wrong man for the position.

Completely agree, but there’s no system you could run that makes our players look good? So you have to show what you want to run for future recruits.

For example, Geoff Collins is not going to run the triple option next year, even though that is what Tech’s players are best suited for because he needs to recruit for what he wants to run.

That is an invalid comparison in my opinion.
