Crean would be a special kind of hell for UGA fans.
You're a purdue fan, you maybe don't undersatnd what it's like for us. Crean would be wonderful compared ot what we're used to.

He recruits well...but
Idc abotu the but, we're not used to great recruiting so that'd be awesome.

Terrible defensive coach.
we currently have a terrible offensive coach. At least we'd get to see some points scored
quote:
In the end, he’s too inconsistent and never built anything sustained at Marquette or IU.
The guy has a final 4, 4 sweet 16s, and 9 tourney apperances under his belt. He's won an NCAAT game wiht 3 different teams. We haven't won an NCAAT tourney game since many of our posters were in middle school. You seem to think that if we aren't competing for final 4s we're gonan be pissed. All we want is to be a regular contender ot make the tourney and hey maybe even actually win a game there here and there. No reaosn to think crean can't do that.

Matta is worse.
LOL. Matta woudl be an absolute, no questions, grand slam.
quote:
.Ron Hunter is your man.
I think it's funny people keep trying to push ron hunter on UGA like he's the big answer. He's got a career 58% win clip in dreadful leagues (ie he's not competing against UK or Kansas every year). In 20 seasons coaching in a league 3 times. He's made the tourney 3 times in his career, which is very solid considering his schools. But I mean who is his main competition in his league? GA Southern, ULM, Ark-Little Rock, Texas State, Troy, etc...we're not really talking about a murderer's row here. And there is zero doubt whatsover he has an exponentially easier talent pool and campus to sell than every other league opponent with potentially 1 or 2 exceptions.
It seems to me everyone wants to pump up HUnter for 3 reasons; his team is currently in the tourney this season, he coaches in Atlanta, and he's a likeable guy.
If UGA hires ron hunter it would be an utter failure and basically saying "well, we looked at a bunch of other proven, big name basketball guys but couldn't get them so we'll go get this guy down the street"

Sad reality is that this may end up happening. Not gonna lie, I am pretty disappointed in the miss on Thad Matta.
I blame McGarity for missing this one. If only he had more salesmanship and if only he was more likeable. If only we had someone other than McGarity. Seriously, Fox’s comments about McGarity not developing a partnership with the MBB coach could have played a role.

I'm disppointed but not completely down yet. We went after our #1, first tier, grand slam hire and didn't get him. Not the end of the world. If we miss on Crean I'll be sweating.
I blame mcgarity for everythign I can reasonable do so but I don't put this on him.

I don't think McGarity was the reason we missed on Matta. Matta was playing us for his buyout money.
Tubby Smith got fired. We could do far worse than bringing him back.

Pretty embarrassing to get used by a dude named Thad.

I’m sure Matta decided going from a team who spends whatever is needed in a basketball conference to a team best known for its frugality in a football conference was not a good career move.

And one of the times he made the NCAA tournament, it was because his son was on the team. Pretty sure recruiting his own son wasn't overly difficult. This year, they took a chance on D'Marcus Simonds, a very solid HS player, but got in a decent amount of trouble (believe he was kicked out of at least one school). Kid was a very good high school player.
He might end up fine, but it would be such an underwhelming hire IMO.

Ya, a cripple , who got fired, named Thad, doesn’t think UGA is a good job...
Think about that...

Go back and watch an Ohio State game from 15-16 or 16-17. You’d never want Matta within 100 miles of your program if you saw that abortion of wasted talent.
If it was 2012, Matta is a homerun. In 2018, he’s as big of a risk as Hunter....and 1/10th as hungry.
I’d rather take a guy who achieves at a lower level who is on his way up than a guy who tanked a program at the High D1 level and is out looking for a new gig.
The first 2-3 years with Crean might get you A tourney appearance. Going and not making the 2nd weekend gets old. He won the league once with a team that should have won the Natty. DWade is his 1 hit wonder. If he were a good coach, he’d have a lot more than 1 F4 under his belt.

I heard UGA was on par with most bball schools. Just need a good coach is all.

I get the idea, but that has never worked for UGA ever. The program could really use someone with some big school credibility.

Go watch a Rick Barnes coached game at the end of his time at Texas.

So R.J. Hunter (Ron’s son) isn’t a 1 hit wonder despite the only time Ron has won an NCAA tournament game was with R.J., on a horribly designed play?

I think we would be better off with someone who can really recruit, even if he is only decent in the coaching department. We've got to get some of the Atlanta talent we've never gotten.

It’s apples to oranges. Expecting a mid major to achieve at sustained high levels is crazy. Going 2/5 in a 1 bid league like Hunter has is pretty impressive.
If he finishes 1-4th in the SEC like he’s done at his current conference, and sustains it like he has...you’d be pretty damn happy.
Setting a goal of just making the tourney is silly. You want a guy who can continue to build. Hunter has proven he can do that.
Take it from a Purdue fan (UGA grad)... we have a guy who recruits a little, a guy who’s a good in game coach...but who’s teams seem to choke in big games. You want a team that peaks in march. Not January. You want a guy who wins in March.
Hunter can pull 2 of the top 10 out of GA every year easily. He probably does that now at State. He’ll do better at UGA. He already has the relationships in place, he’s a good in game coach and wins big games.
To me, that’s better than hoping Matta starts caring again and hoping that Crean can sustain success long term...which he’s never been able to do.
When your rival is sad to see your teams coach leave...you have a shitty coach.

No doubt...we'd have a roster full of top 100's and be a perennial top 10.

I think he's referring to 2013 Indiana. That was a loaded team that got smacked around like a ragdoll by Syracuse in the Sweet 16

Yeah shucks it sure would suck to be in that position. Oh wait we havent been in that position in 20 years. Idc if we lost by 30 I'd love to make the sweet 16.
