Three issues I haven’t seen discussed
1. Camarda’s blown punts. If he doesn’t shank that punt at the end of the first half, they don’t score and it’s a different game coming into the second half. Plus, he shanks another one later in the game to alllow UF to keep up the pressure on our D, as if that hadn’t been the case all night.

2. UF kept torching us with the RB coming out of the backfield as a receiver. Our adjustment was woefully inadequate if not nonexistent

3. Mathis’s body language/demeanor on the sideline told me all I need to know about him. On top of the “my bads” and patting himself on the chest to acknowledge shitey/missed passes, his pouting on the sideline is unacceptable and shows he doesn’t have what it takes to lead a team.

You suggest taking the ILB’s off the field?

1. Yes, normally our kicking game is good and Camarda sure didn't help our cause yesterday.
2. Our defense is decimated with injuries but at some point you would think the DC would assign someone to stop Pierce from being wide open out of the backfield.
3. Mathis behaves like someone who had brain surgery and it definitely shows in his demeanor. I would guess that he is reconsidering his football career but probably doesn't see many other viable options.

Mathis must be slowly coming to the realization that a successful college career for him begins anew at some place like Alcorn State

Three excellent points. If it could go wrong then it went wrong yesterday

#2 bothers me.

I know the defense has given up some large point totals in the past.

But that is the first time that this staff appears to have been outcoached without the ability to adjust. It wasnt just personnel. It was scheme.

Likewise.
Our only excuse is that our defense was basically decimated with injuries and apparently we didn't have anyone out there who could cover Pierce out of the backfield.
When you lose your starting QB/Safety on defense, it hurts the entire defensive coordination. And frankly the way we lost LeCounte to a stupid motorcycle accident pisses me off because we have seen this act before and it seems like the play always ends the same with our team coming up short every season.

That's part of what bothers me.
Rice and Dean are healthy. Covering the RBs is usually their responsibility.

I'm not positive about zone coverage in the flats. That changes more often. But typically when spread out and in man responsibilities, that falls on Dean or Rice.

I do think this made Rice too valuable to sub. If Rice was on the sidelines, Lecounte could pick up responsibilities in aligning the defense and making the check calls. Without Lecounte, we may not have felt comfortable with Walker or Tindall quarterbacking the defense.

We dont need excuses to be frustrated. We should be frustrated. But I don't mind <25 year olds acting like <25 year olds. I'm too libertarian to think that these kids should be under bubble wrap. For the most part, they have been responsible with covid (knock on wood). Was the accident Lecounte's fault? Or the other driver?

We figured 3 out 1/2 way through the 3rd quarter. We chipped the RB and blitzed more. Trask is great with a clean pocket. When he had pressure and we took his primary away, he was not nearly as effective. It was a game plan against our defense. Too bad we didn't fix it sooner.

Maybe Dan Lanning isn't an elite coordinator. Maybe his numbers are skewed in his favor because we overwhelm lesser teams with a lot of talent.

What was the last decent offense with NFL talent that we've shut down? UF last season?

We couldn’t cover them in man without a lot of pressure. Same as Bama. Need to be able to

How good of a defensive scheme can you really come up with if your personnel are so depleted that you're asking kids in the band if any of them can fill in at safety?

Rice and Dean are healthy.
They cover the backs (did you see the game? Who was trailing to make the tackle).

If smith made a mistake, it's on him.
If burns made a mistake, it's on him.

But those yards by RBs... those are on dean and rice. The same as tank Bigsby against Auburn and the same as CEH against LSU (except when Cine was the 7th db).

Dont put injuries as an excuse when it was the starters (and coaching/scheme/playcalling) giving up the yards.

Are you seeing why it bothers me?

In addition, there’s been so much bragging about how deep this D is, you can’t say the backups aren’t able?

To some extent, yes. However, injuries disrupt the system. Players have to think about things that that they otherwise wouldn't, because they're not as sure about the guys filling in, etc. It therefore becomes easier to make mistakes, since focus isn't as strong.

I think Quay and Channing are more able to cover a RB out of the backfield than Rice.

I dont think Quay or Channing have seen every single offensive alignment and shift as it pertains to every single defensive alignment, call, and check.

Then that goes against everything Kirby preaches to our defense. Do your job. Know your assignment. Getting stuck between 2 makes you less capable of performing any role. We are a Gap/Assignment defense.

I thought Rice was dealing with a foot injury still? Is he back close to 100%?
