Hell yes it makes a difference if you go back 30 years. does SMU get judged by what they did in 1985? If it's ENDEMIC to the school and continues
decade after decade (se Bama and AU) there's a HUGE difference between UGA and our "friends" to the west.

Given that they were pretty much made the poster boys for bad behavior, the 1980s stuff casts a long shadow. SMU isn't exactly judged by it, but their Death Penalty still gets referenced a lot. Hell, ESPN made a documentary about it not that long ago.
