The State of GA Tech Football

-back-to-back-to-back 3 win seasons under the new coach
-yet he didnt get fired
-only 7 conference wins in last 3 years
-the ATL waffle house cup rebranding campaign an utter absolute embarrassing failure

-with Ole Miss and UCF on their schedule this year, a 1 win season actually looks possible
-athough I can see them probably scratching out 3 wins again. Tops
-Theyll have an interim head coach filling in by the time they get to Athens in November

-an administration that doesn’t care about football
-a student body that doesnt care about football
-the alumni that do care are middle aged or over and will be gone in a few decades

-few if any NIL opportunities
-in a conference on the brink of collapse
-as the super conferences form
-one of the last teams in ACC that another conference would be courting
-if/when the ACC dissolves
-i mean, who would want them?
-just the fact that nobody anywhere talks about the sad state of their program speaks to how irrelevant theyve become

So, are we actually witnessing the beginning of the end of the GA Tech football program? Will it even exist in 10 or 15 years? If they survive, what does that look like? And where do they go from here

I can see a world where Tech slides into whatever FCS football is called once the Power 5 goes towards the super conferences

They don’t have the commitment/buy in necessary, on any level, to stay FBS/P5.

If they get another flop hire after Jeff with a G is gone, it’s lights out for them.

I think what jeff with a j is saying is it's already happening and unrecoverable and I agree. Nick Saban could go there next year and it wouldn't matter.

The beginning already happened. It was the hiring of Paul Johnson.

Yes they had a couple of really good seasons, but Johnson’s recruiting strategy or lack thereof created a roster situation that was going to be unsalvageable for whoever the next coach was. Collins was simply the sacrificial lamb for that role.

All the problems you stated about lack of administrative and student care in the program hurts, but Johnson submarining the roster for a decade is what dug the grave.

Now all that’s left is for NIL and super conferences to lower them down into it.

There is one possible and interesting lifeline for them that I can see potentially possibly playing out maybe. Although a long shot.

Now that the Big 10 is the first coast to coast “national” conference, will the SEC abandon their Southern regional roots and accept schools from beyond the footprint when it comes time to expand again ? (I for one hope the hell not)

So, lets say the Big 10 accelerates by poaching a FL state, or Clemson, Miami, or a UNc Va tech etc to get to 20 teams. The SEC would then be motivated to get to at least 18, possibly 20. And if they are smart and understand that regional identity and tradition are at the core of what drives SEC enthusiasm… would they maybe at that point consider adding GA Tech due to their location and history?

Im personally against all of the expansion nonsense. But if its going to happen, id welcome GA tech back. It would take a while for them to resemble anything competitve, but imagine all of the new matchups . I think im actually pulling for this now.

Also, Tech then becomes a conference game opening up the schedule further to whatever OOC scheduling that Kirby sees fit

It would take a solid 10 years of fairy dust just to get GT up to par in today's level of football, which in 10 years would still be 10 years behind what football is then. I think they are done. We still get to watch the death rattle for a while.

Tech somehow got the prime time spot this year on labor day. Against Clemson in the sterile concrete Atlanta benz warehouse

Don’t expect many tv camera views of the crowd though. There’ll probably be 200 Tech fans in attendance. In their own city

They brought this on themselves. Multiple self inflicted gun shot wounds.

Clempson fans will show up in droves. But where will they park all their tractors?

I realize that college football has changed drastically. However, as an oldtimer, it is still hard to believe how far Ga Tech has fallen since the days when they were a member of the SEC.

If Tech had remained in the SEC, would they be anything other than another Vandy?

Think of the state of intra-state Southern football rivalries…

Its about the regional rivalry Greg Sankey. Embrace hate:

Iron Bowl - always matters
FL vs FL state - still a big deal
Egg Bowl - a dude recently lifted his leg and mimiced peeing like a dog
- also is one of my favorite games of year being on thanksgiving night
SC vs Clemson - well
Texas vs A&M - not sure if technically pure Southern, but one of the best
LSU Ark - it’s coming back with pittman

And then there’s COFH on espn3

Not sure why or how it happened, but this thread has attracted the wise. Almost simultaneously as the GSB gets swept into the SECrant sewer due to lack of hall monitor term limits and e-cancer

Keep your heads on a swivel, fellows

The whole US higher education system is on the ropes.

But what about the GA tech model that trains the globe so that they can go use their skills to invest back in their home towns abroad?

We are literal frickn idiots
