790 The Zone in Atlanta has announced that the “three individuals” involved in a bizarre and unfunny bit involving former Saints defensive back Steve Gleason have been fired.
The station has announced the move without naming the (former) hosts of the show: Stephen “Steak” Shapiro, Nick Cellino, and Chris Dimino.
Here’s the full statement, posted the station’s website: “We deeply regret the offensive programming that aired this morning on ‘Mayhem In The AM’ on 790 The Zone, related to former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason and his battle with ALS. We suspended the three individuals involved immediately following their comments and have since terminated their employment. 790 The Zone, our owners, sponsors and partners in no way endorse or support this kind of content. We sincerely apologize to Mr. Gleason, his family and all those touched by ALS.”

Good. I am in no way a PC person, and think being PC has ruined this country.
However, their display this morning was outrageous and not funny in the slightest evidenced by the outrage.
Sponsors of a show can't have their name attached to such pitiful people, thus they lost their job.
Like one of the jackasses said in his 'apology'.....you live and you learn.

I met Steak a time or three back when he was still part owner with Saltzman at a coupla meet & greets at various sporting events trying to sell me & others advertising on 790...
I felt then that he was an insufferable, pompous prick... seems that the chickens have come home to roost... Good riddance...JMO..
Dimino used to be as good of an MLB analyst & interviewer as there was out there. He knew his stuff & did some great interviews with some of the all time greats...
Cellini... meh.. I think his dad(or older bro) Jim opened Steverino's & Sons of Italy back in the early 70's on S. Lumpkin St. so I'll give him that...

The shite wasn't even a funny bit. Here it is if you haven't heard it..... LINK
Honestly, do you find that bit funny (not saying you do)? Steve Gleason has done more to raise ALS awareness than anyone I can think of.
As a Saint fan, I have watched his demise the last 2 years and it is catastrophic to see. I don't think there is a more horrible disease than ALS, and the work he is doing is commendable.
Making fun of him is the bottom of the barrel as far as I am concerned. frick those idiot fools.
As a side note, this shitstorm started from the Saint's board, which shows the power of this board.

I don't even have to listen to it to know it's not funny.
I'm one of those people who can laugh at jokes about cancer because it's common place, I have had friends and family survive it/joke about it, I am certainly at risk for it, etc.
ALS, however, is (IMO) about the worst possible disease imagineable. It is a slow, painful death sentence and those who suffer from it deserve our compassion and admiration.
ETA: That's not to say cancer cant be the same (I know first hand this to be true) but at least with cancer there is always a slight chance that it can be caught, it can regress, etc. With ALS, you're fricked. It's going to kill you eventually and you are basically trying to wring out every bit of life from each day that you can. Three pieces of shite joking about it obviously doesn't really help you to meet that end.
Quite frankly, there are just some lines you don't cross and ALS is one of them (and I am quite adamant against the PC conditions we have grown into as a society).
ETA2: Also, cancer kids are off limits. Because frick you if you're making fun of a little kid who has not developed the mental/physical capabilities to last/ward off a disease an adult might be able to cope with.

We are on the exact same page. No way could they keep their job with the shite storm they caused their sponsors.
Plus, just frick those dudes.

(never listened to the 790 radio show(Bobby Bones controls the airwaves of Augusta, GA) & didn't know about the Saints player)
Saw this though:
Saw this though:

The dismissal, despite the circumstances, came as "a relief, really," Cellini said. "That station is a sinking ship."
His contract, he said, was up in November and he figured even then, it wouldn't have been renewed.
Cellini has been part of the Zone since it debuted in 1997. He has been working with Dimino that entire time, first in afternoons, then the mornings since 2003. Shapiro co-owned the station for 13 years and made a boatload of money off of it but blew it when he and his partner Andrew Saltzman gambled on a station in St. Louis that tanked. They were forced to sell it in 2010 to Lincoln Financial, which owned the signal. Shapiro has been a paid employee ever since. (Saltzman left last year.) Shapiro's contract was up September 8.
Cellini believes since CBS created the third sports talk station at 92.9 called the Game last fall, he sensed the Zone was going to die eventuallly. He felt Lincoln Financial, which isn't really a focused media company like CBS or Clear Channel, never made a real commitment to find an FM signal for the station, which he feels is a necessity in this day and age. (Rival 680/The Fan is also on 93.7.)
Ratings weren't off by much since the new station arrived but clearly, ad revenue became much more scarce.
He also saw the writing on the wall with the lack of advertising at times. "We had to stretch things out between commercials," he said. And there is no general sales manager.
Ultimately, this was an excuse, Cellini said, for the station to cut salary and insert a cheaper syndicated morning show, Cellini said. Syndicated "Mike & Mike" will likely be on tomorrow morning.
I'm told by a good source that all three hosts were well compensated for radio jobs - in the low six figures. And they all have other gigs, too. Dimino, for instance, also works at CSS.
Shapiro was more measured in his tones about the firing. "I am not going to disparage Lincoln Financial," he said. (They did bail him out.) "The ironic thing for me is that I'm an afficianado of the Saints and Steve Gleason. The bit was ill advised."
He said that two-minute clip is not representative of what they had done four hours a day for years.
He hopes to get another sports talk radio gig down the road even while he runs Atlanta Eats, a TV show and web site brand focused on Atlanta restaurants.
I reached Dimino at about 7:10 p.m., but he said he needed to make a couple of other calls before he could get back to me.

I agree on your edit as well. I wouldn't make jokes about Cancer either TBH. but that can be curable. We are watching Gleason's death in front of our eyes. Joking about that is just pitiful IMO.

bullshite. I hope this follows that POS. I in no way blame Falcon fans or Atlanta for this little bitch BTW.

The Falcons/Saints thing has been blown way out of proportion for years.. many Coon fans could really give two shits... just playing along with the hype imo.

I actually always rooted for the Saints before their fanbase grew big heads after their Super Bowl win. The whole "rivalry" really is one-sided; all the flack we send back is simply in defense or spurned on by their irrational hatred for/inferiority complex toward ATL.

Met all three of 'em alond with Salsa. Steak and Cellini were actually very good guys not so much for Salsa (never met a bigger arse)
Domino was OK but please, stop with baseball analyst expertise bullshite. The only thing he does is get on the web and ape the opinion of the day. He's a loudmouth insecure ahole when he comes to analyzing with his own wits, Example; After the FIRST series of last year vs the Mets he dubbed the Braves season for 2012 "complete disaster" for what a joke.

STFU! The station was going down the tubes especially w/out an FM signal. 92.9 was the final nail in the coffin...these guys were gonna be gone with or without this incident. This just made it happen faster.
You're just pissed becuase he makin fun of one of your own. Good lord, quit being such a sensitive bitch. Cellini's been making fun of retards for years.

Hawking transcends the disease, though. He's not famous for having ALS; he's famous for being the most intelligent atheist in the world.
I honestly couldn't tell you anything about Gleason except that he (apparently) used to play for the Saints and has ALS. The latter is enough for me to give the dude a pass as far as fricking with him goes.
ETA: Really what it comes down to is people with ALS I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt: if they want to be fricked with like any other person, I'm happy to oblige. But if they want all the sympathy in the world, a full-blast pity party, well, I'm happy to oblige that as well. As far as I'm concerned, they've earned the right to be treated however they ask to be treated. The default should be sympathy unless they say, "Naw, go ahead and make fun of the wheelchair and the drool. I wouldn't have it any other way."

Given that ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, I think Mr. Gleason is, at best, 2nd in raising awareness.
