I will vote against people who I think are active players in this decision-making and speak out at every opportunity to whoever wants to listen.

I expect societal unrest and disobedience is likely if these restrictions last longer than a few more weeks, regardless of my feelings on the matter. $1200 isn't going to get it done for many, never mind the social and psychological issues that will undoubtedly become a significant issue.

However, one thing that is helping us weather the financial aspect of this storm is out Emergency Fund. Dave Ramsey suggests people have 3-6 months of take home wages in a savings account for just such emergencies. Stuff like this and loss of job, car breakdowns, etc.

Always nice to have one when you can. Unfortunately, a lot of people can’t put away that much when they’re younger and have to pay off different debts/bills.

Ramsey has some good thoughts, but also others that make me question his financial knowledge (e.g, not using credit cards). I do think he is really good for people with spending issues though.

Over a thousand Americans were dead including over 100 children before President Obama declared a National State of Emergency in his response to the Swine Flu virus. Trump declared an emergency after only 48 most of which were elderly in a nursing home in Washington State; none of the deaths were children. I seriously doubt if you were bitching about Obama's slow response at the time, Mr. Hack.

Trump also halted all flights to and from China and later did the same for European flights. Meanwhile liberal progressives were screaming racism and that this action was part of Trump's ongoing war against immigration. Obama would have never taken such decisive action for fear of angering his liberal base. I'm guessing that if you were intellectually honest, you also considered it an overreaction at the time and opposed President Trump's actions per usual.

This isn’t realistic for most Americans,

Sure it is. I checked and my wife and I have 10 months in our savings account. It's a matter of discipline. People can do it, but most people do not have the will to do it. At our peak my wife and I made about $120,000.00 a year. We were not and are not rich. While doing that we gave between 10-15% to our church, and helped people in need from time to time.

It just a matter of living within and even below your means until you get bills paid off. The problem is most people live beyond their means and borrow money and use credit cards too much.

I don't agree with everything Dave Ramsey says, but I do agree with about 95%.

quote:

nor is it acceptable to have to burn through this savings due to a government-mandated shutdown.
We are not having to, but for some who do have to....what is the alternative?

Ramsey has a saying. "Live like nobody else, so you can live like nobody else."

I suspect you are young enough that if you read his books and took his advice you could easily retire early and have a huge nest egg so you can do all the things you've dreamed of.

The key: Be disciplined.

BTW....I retired when I was 55. Now we can travel and pretty much buy what we want when we want. I work when I want and if I want. We pay cash for our cars, and have given our last two cars away to people who needed them. (Note: We save the money that is in our budget until we can pay cash for them, and we drive the cars for 10 or so years)

What I linked comes directly from the Trump administration. The HHS inspector general surveyed hospital administrations. The watchdog's entire report is there for you to read.

You are free to believe bullshite from Deeprig or you can read the HHS survey and learn what is really happening in our hospitals.

I get it. But I was young once, too. (A long, long time ago!)

I always used the excuse that I couldn't afford to get into my companys 401K. But when I did....my wife and I lived (and still do) under a fairly strict budget. The only thing we owe money on is our house, and if we wanted to (Or had to) we could pay it off tomorrow.

You have to start young, though. Well, the younger you start the better off you will be. Is it easy? Not really. You can't do what other people do...or live the way they live.

Look up a book called "The Millionaire Next Door" by by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko...then read Dave Ramsey's book "The Total Money Makeover".

They will open your eyes to a lot of things. It's not about looking like you have money....it's about actually having it. Most people that look like they have money actually owe a ton of money.

My apologies. I didn't mean to hijack this thread and turn it into a Financial seminar. Finances have always been an interest of mine.

ETA
The credit card thing is an area I part ways with him. We use credit cards, but we make sure we can pay them off every single month. I don't remember ever having to pay interest on a credit card. I'm sure it has happened, but I don't remember it.

If anybody else wants to discuss finances start another thread. I'll keep an eye on it and will join in on it, but I don't want to start a thread if nobody is really interested. And, that will keep us from derailing this thread anymore than we (I) already have.

5 of the last six days have falling or flatlined new cases to new tests.

5 straight days of falling or flatlined daily new hospitalization.

Looks like the daily case numbers finally decreased in the U.S. on 4-4-2020. This is from the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus tracking website: Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Tracking
This is the daily increase graph for the U.S.

The CDC isn't open on weekends. Look back and you will find a dip each weekend. I was fooled the first time I saw new cases decline. Later I discovered the reason for the decline.

Here is the graph that fooled me into having hope of a turnaround.

It wasn't to be though. Cases jumped way up in the days after.
