Breakdown of all the moving pieces needed to make this happen.
I knew they got embarrassed, but I didn't know about this play till I just saw it in Twitter.

If they had played any team with a pulse that dude would've been knocked TF out.

Funny as hell. Some out there say this is classless but I say it’s fair game if the opposing team doesn’t have their head in the game.
TCU almost pulled off a badass punt return vs Ohio State. TCU guy laid down in the end zone and waited for the guy who caught the ball to pass it over to him. It worked to perfection with the exception of the lateral pass being forward rather than reverse so the TD didn’t count.

Now,some punt returner is gonna raise his arm just a tad, and some kick coverer is gonna knock the punt returners head off and rape his soul on the way to the ground ...and the tackler will get a 15 yard penalty and ejection. I think it sets a bad precedent. The guy motioned his hand. They need to blow the whistle... or, they need to just let the punt returners get rocked if they don’t hold their hand a mile in the air.

This. Had the same argument with a buddy who thought it was such a good play. By the letter of the law, it's valid... But it's the kind of play that's likely to meet one of two things... 1- a copycat who pays the price... Or 2- an additional rule change that further cheapens special teams as the NCAA seeks to overcorrect everything on that side of the ball.

I wrote a post about this on the rant several years ago. They let punt receivers wave fair catch when the defenders are 30 yards upfield dodging blocks, and then they call a penalty because the defender didn't see the fair catch signal. It was only a matter of time til somebody took advantage of that confusion.

I hate adding more rules but I wouldn’t be surprised or disappointed to see them do something about this next year. Like a call that basically blows the whistle after a pause like you saw here. It was a pretty egregious pause so I don’t think it’s that bad of a rule change.
I just think that trick play is a slippery slope

Exactly... That kid is the best friend of my good friends kid (I know a stretch)as they played football at Lake Dallas together, Close to where I used to live in Texas. Anyway their son told me they have been practicing that for months and that Keegan was terrified when they were bearing down on him. They knew if one player didnt take the bait he could have been blown up.
Which is why if you notice he started running pretty quickly after he caught it.
Cute play but yes do that against a disciplined team and you could get your player put in traction.

If the punt returner raises his hand just a tad to be a smart arse then he probably needs his head knocked off.
If this guy truly raised his hand then the ref should have been paying attention and you’re right they should blow a whistle.
But I don’t agree that it should be outlawed. If the returner doesn’t raise his hand and the opposing team doesn’t have their head in the game it’s no different than any other trick play.
Personally I wouldn’t risk it myself or with my own team but to each their own. If someone wants to take that risk it’s on them.

If I read correctly, the returner specifically told the ref that he wasn't calling for a fair catch. I think that had something to do with the lack of a whistle.

The issue is, my bet is if they lit him up, it would have been a personal foul. Fair catch signals have gotten more nonchalant over the years.

Dont think so and the coach specifically refused to answer the question about the refs being consulted about the play.

Ref should have to make a signal once a player has signaled fair catch. Like raising his hand above his head.

They have a rule already...
An invalid fair catch signal is when the player signaling for a fair catch does not fully extend his arm above his head. If the players arm is flexed, an invalid fair catch penalty will be called and the ball will be marked down at the spot of the invalid fair catch and then assessed a five yard penalty.

I think it was big risk but it paid off.
If you don't hear a whistle then you should always tackle the player who catches the ball.

Certainly, but the tackle would have looked a lot like what got Cook tossed from APSU.
Refs are often slow to whistle.
