We really didn't have many fancy places in Athens in the 80s . Seems like Harry Bissetts was the longest standing fancyish place. Some came and went. When the last Resort opened, it was fancy, but at the same time, relatively casual. Really was a pioneer of the gourmet chic places you see a lot now. I went there a good bit on my second tour in Athens. It was crowded for game weekends, but I rarely went at times there was a wait. I’m sure there a lot more places in Athens now. I still go back to my old spots if they are still open. Losing Rocky’s hurt. Loved that place.

Weaver D's goes out of business every 3 or 4 years for a go-fund-me drive then miraculously stays in business. I have only had their food to-go and at catered events, it's pretty good. I have never actually been inside.

This is why so many people love 5&10. It was really the first fine dining gourmet place that Athens had, it was celebrity chef Hugh Atchison's launch pad. When they started, it made Bissetts and Last Resort look like Applebee's.

When I was there back in the 90's we always went to the BBQ Shack. Legit BBQ. Going to the game saturday and hope to stop by there again.

I think the Weaver dude was named Dexter, but people called him Weaver. I ate lunch there a decent bit. His fried chicken and fried pork chops were solid. He was an odd dude. Didn't realize he was still alive

Someone should write up a screenplay for Netflix on the dark underbelly of this quaint little southern college town. Netflix literally doesn't turn down scripts. We could all write it here, collaboratively.

Yes, and the slave graves on campus. Oppression and privilege has to be a theme to get it to the top of the netflix charts. And this was originally native American land, a sacred place at Tallassee Shoals. A safe place for the natives that were chased off from the coast, they settled on the Oconee in Athens in the 1600's. Then in late 1700's the white man came again.

Probably going to make some enemies but I went to Weaver D’s once and that was plenty

Weaver D's is fine and an absolute must visit at least once. It's an experience and it's worth it to check out. i would trust a person less if they went to UGA and didnt try Weaver D's once.

that said, i probably only went 3-5 times and i absolutely love southern food and the exact vibe that Weaver D's presents.

TK Harty was the guy who got killed. 1977...long before my time but heard a lot about it. He was killed in a murder-for-hire instigated by a guy named Mooney who owned a rival restaurant/bar called Somebody's Pizza.

TK and Mooney were apparently in a beer price war.

As a fun fact, Mooney got paroled very recently after 30+ years in prison. And now living in Blackshear!

TKs / Mooneys war started started nickel night that moved over to Lowerys tavern with a former TK employee.

$5 cover and $1 got you 20 beers or house liquor drinks.

TK had already killed a guy from what I heard. There was some sort of redneck mafia thing going on then. Assume it was drugs or money laundering or both. That all changed when El Azteca got in the game.

Mooney opens competitor to TKs…offered cheap arse beer. TK buys Mooney’s building and tried to evict. Somebody tried to burn TK deck. Mooney hires hit man and kills TK. Mooney goes to jail but escapes in……1980…caught in 1989. Mooney paroled 2020.

Unsolved mysteries

TKs had $5 night well after he died. Then they opened some place called Flying Buffalo next to it. Seems like it was an old train station. Is it still there?

Flying Buffalo was after…not there that I know of. The phase after those was Lowerys and O’Malleys. Worked with some guys from TK and Flying Buffalos …some amazing stories.
