Some programs get NCAA love and some get NCAA spankings

Wooden (especially after the arrival of Sam Gilbert) may have been the most corrupt coach of all time but gets to retire with records intact.

Indiana gets busted for too much texting and has never fully recovered from the NCAA sanctions

Smith originates the worst academic cheating scandal in NCAA history at UNC and gets off with no penalties to their cash cow of MCBB after 20 years of fraud

Mizzou self reports minor issues and gets hammered

Feel free to point out who gets NCAA love and who gets hammered with a minor mis step

NCAA so pissed off about Bama they had to put a smackdown on somebody. Better Mizzou than us.

The tutor went on a rant on twitter saying she basically took tests for Mizzou players. Not a minor issue IMO

I might want to wear this when UGA plays Mizzou.

Although the tutor said she felt pressure to ensure student-athletes passed courses, according to the committee’s report, the investigation did not support that her colleagues directed her to complete the student-athletes’ work.

It continued that the tutor engaged in the activity despite receiving extensive and comprehensive education on appropriate tutoring practices

It's fun to mess with other schools etc but if those are the conclusions the committee drew then the punishment is wayyyy over the line.

The NCAA is one of the most hypocritical organizations there is. Every person here would be absolutely livid if that's the punishment UGA received for a similar offense.

If you read between the lines of what the NCAA agrees *did* happen, it seems pretty clear that they set her up to be the scapegoat and did so effectively. Specific individuals were placed with her and she was told that they needed to remain/become eligible. Everyone was very careful not to tell her to break the rules and yet she was also pressured to ensure that they passed. I'm not excusing it, but let's not pretend like the university wasn't aware of what they were asking.

With that said, given that the NCAA was not able to prove it, the post season ban seems a little heavy handed. Particularly given that they were all the way down the rabbit hole with UNC and decided that there wasn't anything they could do about it.

If anything, this just proves that you should never self report anything that you can't decisively conclude what the punishment will be and never fully cooperate with the NCAA any longer.

It's the way they arbitrarily handle things that bothers me.

Yep... Consistency is all that I think a rational individual cares about here... It's ok if things are consistently over or under punished... just don't fricking play favorites. But it is what it is...

We got hammered for stupid shite in the 80's and 90's along with a self imposed NCAA tourny ban for the Harrick idiocy in '04.

The NCAA never forgot the lawsuit we brought against
them in the early 80's

If we have learned anything it’s that you should lie. We, Ole Miss, GT, and Mizzou self report and get raked over the coals. UNC and Miami lie/bribe their way out of anything lasting

Why does the ncaa still exist? What if all the major programs decided not to play by their rules?

I mean you see their decline and power now. After Oklahoma and Georgia won their case it’s been a steady decline. Slow at first but you see more and more as time goes by their waning influence. 10 years ago I don’t remember there being grad transfers until Masoli but then you’d rarely see a waiver for immediate eligibility. Now you see college free agency.

SMU got the death penalty but Penn State and particularly Baylor didn’t come close. Power programs like UNC are almost untouchable and I would dare the ncaa to go against Alabama now like they did decades ago. It’s all just my thoughts and I’m sure there are others way more versed than me on the subject but I think it’s a matter of time.

As of now the bug schools probably don’t see a need to do away with the ncaa because I think more and more they’re controlling the ncaa. What does a blue blood care if a mid tier school like Missouri gets blown to hell? If anything, power schools want to get G5 teams at bay and lower tier P5 schools from cheating their way to being a threat. One day I think it’ll change into a new governing body but it’ll just be a new ncaa. There’s always going to be some form of governance and it’ll always be dictated by the power programs. It’s like the nfl. Fans and players can hate it all day and even some owners will bitch about it but ultimately each team/owners gets exactly what they want.

I don’t see how they can do this to Mizz after how they handled UNC. It looks to me that they find a lamb here and there so the golden geese appear to be under the same rules.

It’s a lame movie quote but this all reminds me of Pirates of the Caribbean when Ian McShane says something like “if i don’t kill a man every now and they forget who I am”
