Does anyone actually know if Kirby will finish out with Bama? Theres still a critical week of recruiting and UGA isnt Colorado St like in McElwains case so he needs to jump quick.

since we are making the announcement after the SECCG, my guess would be that's when we are getting him

I hope

a safe bet, since that's what every single report has said since this thing broke.

Does anyone know why it won't be official til after the game? I assume we did our waiting period already. Is it out of respect to Saban(for smart) or is it the timing of the contract?

I was told there was some sort of buy out or penalty to be avoided if he does not officially do it until Sunday. This guy would know about sports contracts, but not necessarily about Smart's. I am really curious if there is truth to it. This is not an inside source, just one who deals with these type contracts and negotiations.

Actually, the Chip Towers article that broke the news says Kirby will stay on at Alabama through the playoff/national championship and split his duties with Bama and UGA.

Also, talks about how Richt is still coaching through the bowl game.

Makes more sense that way than all the made up shite about Kirby coming straight to Athens Sunday.

From the Chip Towers article.....

quote:

If Alabama wins on Saturday, it will almost certainly be in the national playoff, which means Smart would stay with the Crimson Tide another month. However he could serve in both jobs, recruiting and putting together his staff at Georgia while also preparing Alabama’s defense for a championship run.

This is also how McElwaine handled it with Saban when he was hired by Colorado State and Alabama was in the national championship. Split duties from Tuscaloosa headquarters.

I am assuming all of our current recruits know who is coming and when. I don't think recruiting is going to be an issue as far as head coach is concerned, now the assistants, thats a different story

I think it would make sense for there to be language in Kirby's contract that would be punitive if he left Bama before the end of the regular season and that the SECCG would be considered part of the regular season.

Other wrinkles...

-Smart and Saban are so close and have worked so long together, it makes sense that Smart would do the honorable thing and stick by him through the championship game

-but, with Smart about to be the HNIC next door, does Saban want him sticking around and getting all the prime time national coverage about his current all-star defense and his soon to be new job with recruits watching. Or does he want to show them that he can do it without Smart in the final games.

There are some threads on this on tRant, but why would Alabama want this? Kirby would be sitting in meetings all day with Saban and Co, and then huddling up with his new UGA staff at night. Seems like an insane conflict of interest to me.

My guess is that he would come to Athens after the game on Saturday to be announced and recruit. Around 12/15 or so, a 3-4 week NCAA mandated recruiting dead period starts. He couldn't be on the road or hosting prospects anyway, so he could be in Tuscaloosa gameplanning while running the operation in Athens remotely. His staff would obviously be here.

I can't imagine him being there past Suturday with the significant crossover in recruiting. Big difference than Colorado.

The dead period makes sense, but recruiting is just one part of the job. That is valuable time to be building relationships with his current players, which is arguably more important than recruiting anyways.

If he does go to Bama until early January, does he then go on the road until NSD and then get back to Athens to finally start rubbing elbows with his guys in the clubhouse?

Just wanted to chime in here and say congratulations. I personally feel Smart will do great things at UGA, and the brightside is that even if he doesn't produce on the field as well as Yall would like, he will most definitely stack the cupboards full of elite talent for the next guy. I'm sorry to see him go. He had a much larger impact on our defense then most would have thought.

Moving on, what are the rumors swirling in Athens about Pruitt's future? I read on the Bama board that Kirby wants him to stay but Admin is balking. Is that the case? I'm gonna be honest, I hope so. Kirby and Pruitt recruiting together, and God forbid you get Napier, would be I think easily the best recruiting staff in America.

If I'm Saban though, I'd tell him to move on. No hard feelings, but it's just too much of a distraction.

If Saban cuts Smart loose on Sunday, do we set up a temporary cubicle for him over in the laundry room at Butts-Mehre?

..Because Richt is coaching the team through the bowl game.

As a UGA fan, I wouldn't be mad if he stayed at Bama through the end, as long as his contract and staff are finalized after the SECCG. I would prefer him to be in Athens and getting to work 100% focused, but you have to think coaching Bama while simultaneously recruiting against them (for part of that time, at least) is a net positive for us.

Worst case scenario is a contract going unsigned because of the conflict it would cause with Bama. Don't see that happening, but if it did, it would be terrible.

If he stays, and it looks like will, I doubt Saban will let him recruit in any official capacity for Alabama. Working for one school while activitly recruiting against them doesn't seem like something Kirby would do.
