Richt often talked about the importance of player leaders. Remember how unmotivated Uga was heading into uf in 2012? Shawn Williams fixed that.

Do you think Richt had something to do with that? I would be willing to bet that he talked with Williams and strongly hinted that it was needed badly. Obviously a guess on my part, but I was around football long enough to make that guess.

Won ten because of our very weak schedule. Very average team.

Probably. No argument. but we have a very similar schedule this year, wouldn't you say?

ETA I would add one caveat, though. The team would have looked very different had Chubb remained healthy.

senior level. But it should be on the Junior level. If it isn't there, it is one of the coaches jobs to help develop it.

Only so much a coach can do for a guy. The 2001 team had 15 upper class guys drafted. I wonder if we even have 8 on this roster. Our talent is just so young.

It looks like we have gotten through all the nonsense we suffer after a loss. We can pack it in, now. I have no major problems with Smart. I actually am still excited about the possibilities of the future. I still believe they made the right choice and we will be better in the long run for hiring him.

Absolutely. But that is part of why it is so exciting, isn't it? The promise of the future! I really think the future is bright.

I do wish some of the guys on here (Both pro and anti-Richt) would leave him in the past, though. he is gone. My biggest problem with Richt is he went to Miami. I HATE the Hurricanes!

I doubt Richt wanted Williams to call out half the defense publicly for being soft. It was a risky move and not really Richt's MO. He probably would have rather it been handled privately at that time. Fortunately it worked out.

It would be a interesting case study on locker room chemistry if, say, Trent Thompson or Roquan Smith did that now as sophomores.

Certainly not with the caliber of qb. Those qbs were horrid last year. Overall, I would guess this one will finish much higher on the sos scale than that one.

Oh, definitely! coaches (most of the time) would always prefer stuff like that be handled privately. I suspect he made the hint, hoping Williams would run with it during a clubhouse meeting. Williams just got a little too enthusiastic! But, like you said, it worked out. One of the things i picked up while playing is usually the players you THINK are the leaders of a team aren't.

They were AWFUL! The main reason our secondary looked good....that and apparently the DC was protecting them. Pruitt was good at his job. Just not very good at people skills.

You think so? It's hard to tell. NC might finish with a good record, but lets face it...they were not real good. Ole Miss is stronger than a lot of people think, but still not as strong as Alabama last year. GT should be improved as should Mizzou and Auburn.

SCarolina might actually be worse. Nicholls is VERY bad. Yeah.....I think you are right. The schedule might be a little bit stronger.

Yeah. it's tough for a sophomore. Not impossible, but it would be very tough for a sophomore to get their attention. Chubb might have last year...probably would, but that's not really his personality. He is a lead by example kind of guy.

My first thought was that the seniors would be pissed and may react negatively. What's bad is that my next thought was "but that wouldn't be that impactful, really."

So basically, Smart has some good ones coming and we shall walk the path of Saban into the promised land of the Crystal.

...but don't worry about this season. Anything bad is not his fault.

I swear to Christ this is sounding like a batted wife syndrome.

I haven't said anything like that. Smart's job is to get the absolute most he can out of this team. It's also to build a program for the long-term.

It was one game...we are 3-1...lets just see what happens...if we get bombshelled again vs Tenn then start to struggle against UK...Scar..and Vandy...then we can start to pitchfork a little...but lets see what happens.

Maybe this loss wakes everyone up? (including the coaches)

You know, it's really hard to say how they would react. I think MOST wouldn't like it. but, it was a kid with a forceful personality and a kid that makes an impact it could work.

I'm a little surprised Kublanow or Pyke hasn't stepped in. BUT, sometimes when a coach makes everybody feel uneasy about their role on the team it can make them lose some confidence in being a leader.

I can sum this all up... Kirby is coaching a team that won 10 games... (Didn't beat anyone with a pulse and lost to the equally/better talent teams)... And... WE ARE NOT GOOD...

Alabama was 7-6 in 2007, Saban's first year at Alabama.

But Bama wasn't Saban's first HC gig. It's important to distinguish that. He had already been HNIC twice before that - Sparty and the Dolphins.

I didn't bring Saban up as an example.
I was asked what Saban's record was his first year at Alabama. He was also at LSU. I merely answered a question I was asked.

(You said Kirby, but I am guessing you meant Saban?)
