quote:

"I'll address the George Pickens situation," Smart said. "He was suspended for the first half for violation of team rules and that's all I'm going to say about that. Then, unfortunately, he got an undisciplined penalty and when you make undisciplined decisions, regardless of what done first, you pay a penalty for that. He won't be able to play the first half of next week and when you make emotional decisions, that's what happens."

quote:

"Just disappointed," Smart said. "That's the biggest thing. We don't want to reflect ourselves that way and he'd be the first to tell you that he lost his composure."

quote:

"Look, I love George Pickens," Smart said. "He went to the hospital with us on Friday and did an unbelievable job. He had as much charisma and as much care for those kids as anybody we had there. George is a great kid. He's a freshman. I know now because I have my own children, that you have to love them and you have to help them. And you have to discipline your children. They do things wrong, then they get punished."

He is an awesome talent and like to think he's a good person but the staff may have a battle keeping this kid on the roster next 2 years

I really like Smart.

That’s what you have to do. Sucks for us but it’s the right move.

I'll be thrilled if he makes it through winter, spring, and summer without getting arrested or in some other mess. Maybe he'll grow up if me makes it to his sophomore year.

This may sound stupid but I think the kid really needs a mentor. Someone to bring him back down to reality and to humble himself. Any of the seniors could fill this position.

Being suspended for the first half for undisclosed team violation, come in third quarter and not even making it through a quarter without getting ejected and suspended again, i think he unfortunately is on the way out.

You have to think that these little incidents and him not being able to contribute will sink in. He’s got to feel pretty shitty about this right now.

Gotta hold on to him. He’s 1st Rd. talent. I like him and think he brings an edge to our lacking position on offense. He’ll learn from this and be a better player/person moving forward. Nothing, and I mean nothing, has indicated to me that he’s the arrest type, or a guy that’s just gonna get cox’d out. He’ll be fine.

Maybe Rig. Kirby needs to have a serious talk with this kid. He's not a god and needs to learn to be a team player because its not all about him. Hopefully, he will learn from his mistake today.

To his credit the Tech kid did hit him first in the throat.

Absolutely. They both should have been ejected from the game. The refs screwed up on that one. They were both in the wrong. Fricking ACC refs.

Just because he’s not a pussy doesn’t make him a thug like alot of people have said here. I appreciate his fire and passion.

I don't think he is a thug. Just needs some discipline.

He’s just young and has an young guys ego. If I’d have been a player I’d have spent a lot of time on the sidelines too.

Even with my sneaky speed and unnatural talent.

Can't recall which game it was, maybe Mizzou, but Kirby got onto him about the one handed catch stuff. Next thing you know, the kid had a big game with big catches and hasn't attempted a one-handed catch since.

He's coachable. He's impressionable. He may not be mature but he's mature enough to listen to those around him. I think he grows from this and really becomes thirstier for success. UGA needs to lean on alumni like Chris Conley, Juice Wimms, or AJ Green to sit him down for a conversation about how discipline plays into his future.

The kid needs to grow up fast. Actions like that hurt the team in the long run.

That said, everyone is young once and I hope that this is a good lesson for him that he won’t repeat. We need his talent.

Daily reminder that I started a thread a month ago stating I was very worried about some of the stuff I saw with pickens and a lot of people jumped all over me for that. I'm not gloating but we need to be objective about our players.

This guy has Crowell written all over him and I agree it's going to be hard to keep him on campus for the next two years I believe.

It's troubling. Obviously he is immature and has difficulty controlling his emotions. I would point out that there are direct ways the staff could approach this in a non punitive (ie therapeutic) way. Somebody mentioned a mentor. That's a good idea. He probably needs some good old new age-y cognitive behavioral therapy to help him identify and control his emotional response.

This is probably a better prognosis than a kid who is talented but lazy, unserious and uncoachable (not to pile on but Jasper Sanks comes to mind).

There are plenty of examples of kids who had rough starts, who ended up respected leaders - here at uga and everywhere else too. Ledbetter comes to mind. Tyrann Mathieu was a basket case at LSU and matured into a real man. Of course there are also many examples of kids who never got it and wasted a golden ticket of God given talent.

Speaking of Sanks,he's doing very well these days.Got his degree and was working in the oil business in Houston if I remember.Crowell is another guy who's done
a 180.Stayed outta trouble since he left UGA and put up solid NFL numbers the last 5 years.

Agree about Jasper. That's why i say 'hate to pile on'. He matured too late to save his football career, but more importantly he became a solid citizen and father. He DOES have regrets that he didn't 'get it' until it was too late and he DID squander a world of talent. Jasper was always a good guy, a likable guy, he was just a knucklehead.

His backfield mate is another story. QC was the damn starting QB of the most visible franchise in the NFL and threw it away. In his defense he had a substance abuse issue. Not sure what kind of help he was offered at the time, but that is a legitimate medical condition and should have been treated as such.

I think uga has seen the light on this issue (see Ledbetter, Natrez Patrick, Riley Ridley) and have taken a treatment and not punishment approach to those kids with good outcomes for all involved.
