CBS Sports ranks our secondary as the best in the country entering the 2022 year. I can see some wisdom in this, and I can see where some might consider this a stretch.
Imo:
Reasons it is the best.
Talent
We have Christopher Smith, Kellee Ringo, William Poole, Tykee Smith and Dan Jackson returning. There has been a lot of buzz around Daylen Everette, too. That's a lot of talent, and most have extensive experience. While Jackson was not highly rated, he played a good deal last season, and for the most part did very well. We also have a ton of great young players that got some experience last season.
We have great coaching in the secondary with Kirby and Muschamp working with them. This is an often overlooked aspect, imo.
Reasons CBS overrated it
Losses
First round Lewis Cine, Derrion Kendrick, Speed and Brini are all gone. A lot of talent and experience will be missing, but we can replace some of the talent with young players. The secondary is deep with talent, but lacking in experience outside the starters. Depth with talent but lackin in experience.
We also lost a lot of pass rush and LB experience. Again, talent will not be a problem, but experience among the LBs could be. Our ILB are required to diagnose the opponents plays and react very quickly. We have pretty good experience along the DLine but only time will tell if they can get pressure on the QB consistently. Jalen Carter is there, but there is no doubt in my mind he benefitted from having Travon Walker, Devonte Wyatt and Jordan Davis' presence. Without consistent pressure the secondary will have to step up and be prepared to cover the receivers for an extra 2-3 seconds. Seems like a small amount of time, but when you are back there it can seem like an eternity.
What is y'alls opinion?
Elite secondary?
Great secondary?
Excellent secondary?
Good secondary?
Hold on to your hats, we are going to give up a ton of yards, secondary?
I feel like we will have an excellent secondary once the young guys acquire more experience.

I think the biggest whole is Dean. He was a pass rush demon and covered sideline to sideline. Cine would be a close 2nd imo. Not worried about Carter. As “the guy” he’ll be a real problem coming up middle.
Overall, I think our D will be much like our O next yr. On both sides last year we left a lot of juice on the table because quite frankly we didn’t need it. We weren’t especially exotic on D and shut the O down in most games at halftime. If our max is an 11 we schemed at about a 5 last year. At least that’s what I hope!
Good news is, as you state, we won’t have talent issues. Just experience. That goes for coaching/ game planning as well- meaning they might not know where to set the aggression dial for a few games.

We should be top 3 in the SEC.
I dont know what word describes that level.

The whole defense will need time to gel, we arent replacing talent, we have that in spades, we are replacing experience and leadership. Though in all fairness we have tons of experience just as rotation or late game experience.
So frankily, leadership on both sides of the ball and buy in is what this team needs. Win the first 5-6 while gelling and the playoffs are in reach.

Agreed.
Totally depends on how quickly Green, Everette, Singletary, Humphrey, Starks, and Thomas develop. Also, if Poole can maintain his high level of play that he had in 1 game of his career (to be fair it was the most important game of his career).
C Smith, Ringo, Lassiter, Jackson, and T Smith I feel really good about.

Instead of winning by 21+ points per game, we will win by 17+ points per game.
That is how good I think they still are.
Senior leaders at the key positions:
1) Nolan Smith on edge
2) Beal in the middle
3) Chris Smith in the secondary

I think top 3 in SEC is excellent. Not elite, but that's ok, too. I am excited to see how Lassiter and Everette, and some other young guys develop.

Georgia will almost certainly have the best DBs in the conference, and likely the best nationally. Not as good as last year, but most teams are average as grits in the back end.

This is interesting. I am not familiar with most rosters outside the SEC, and i have never thought of ours as one of the best nationally. BUT, when you think of the players we have brought in, and the coaches we have I could see where it is definitely possible. Once we get last years DB haul up and running it will really be at the top.
I have almost taken it for granted that Alabama has the best of everything, since they have recruited for so long...but we have recruited at the same level for the past few years, so it makes sense that we are at LEAST approaching their roster level.

Last season the secondary was supposedly our big glaring weakness. Everyone conceded that the front 7 was generational, but that secondary was going to get us lit up at some point, and that's why we needed JT Daniels so bad yada yada. That was the narrative for more than half the seaon.
I think our secondary was just fine for all but one game, and I don't even put all that on the secondary.
Basically, all the intellegensia of college football including the intellegensia of our own fanbase said our secondary was Meh last year.
So now the same super smart people are saying that was a great seconday, but this one might not be as good.
I'm not buying it.
I believe this might be the best secondary any college football team has ever seen.
Anyone who disagrees with me is wrong.

Dan Jackson was a demon last year in the limited time he played. On special teams he was on top of every punter and blocked one and recovered one. On defense he blitzed often and hit hard on receivers and RBs.
I look for him to win a couple of games with his defense.

I cut my nails. They were only long because I had just got back from vacation the day before and didn't bring clippers with me.

Yeah but it was funnier this way.

I would say Alabama secondary might be a tad bit better than ours. They're scary good on the back end when everyone's healthy. I got to give credit where credit is due and they do have a good secondary I think ours is very very close though not far off by any means. I will say I'm not as high on Dan Jackson as some on here might be. I think he might be a liability at some point. I do like the kid though he has a ton of heart. I felt like our D line and lbs protected him a lot so he wasn't asked to do to much.
