My buddy has wheels. We'll see what we have time to get into. Wish I could have made a 3 day weekend of it but alas...

I don't doubt it. I was just looking for some quick information to provide, but I agree, I wasn't as big on that list.

Tbird-
Preface: I lived in Athens for a combined 17 years off and on from 1996 to 2016.
Breakfast Spots:
Mayflower - Downtown Broad Street, old fashioned diner with no frills, at an old fashioned pace of service, cash only. It's just an old fashioned diner. No schticks, no gimmicks, been there for many decades, it's just a plain old Southern diner. That's what people love about it. Take your time sipping coffee and shooting the shite, and please don't be in a hurry to get anywhere. If I didn't make it clear above, the service is very slow, but worth it if you aren't in a hurry.
Heirloom Cafe - just outside of downtown on the corner of Chase St and Boulevard, in a residential area. It's very hipstery, but the breakfast food is fantastic. I can't speak to their lunch or dinner menus, I only go for breakfast/brunch.
Waffle House - Hull Rd. Yeah you've eaten at Waffle House a million times but it's never wrong to go to Waffle House for breakfast, if that's the route your party wants to go, the location on Hull Rd on the NE edge of town is the best one in Athens, best staff.
Breakfast Summary- If you were traveling with wife and wanted more fru-fru brunchy fancy places, I could give out rec's for that. But with just a bunch of college buddies, I assume you wouldn't want those recs so I'm not going to type them out.
Non-breakfast Spots:
Cali-n-Tito's - Lumpkin Street - No frills Cuban-Mexican, cash only, BYOB from the gas station next door. The cuban especial sandwich is the most popular thing on the menu, but everything is good. Everyone eats there. Families with kids, college students, old people, it's a local favorite across all demographics because it's awesome. There's a second location on the East Side that I haven't been to, but I'm sure it's great too. I stick to the one on Lumpkin.
White Tiger Gourmet - Hiawassee Ave, it's in the same neighborhood as the hipstery Heirloom Cafe. Don't let the "gourmet" in the name fool you, it's not gourmet, it's a hole in the wall bbq joint that does pork, specifically pulled pork, the traditional way, hickory smoked, and it is damn good. The only way you can do better is to do it yourself. Being from Texas it isn't your idea of BBQ, but it is a perfect representation of our region's bbq. A ringing endorsement, besides myself, is that when the Georgia Theater first started serving food on their rooftop, of all the food service in Athens, they chose White Tiger to be their sole provider.
Blind Pig Tavern - Washington Street downtown, it's your standard sports bar with sports bar fare, but it's all really good, the service is great, TV's everywhere for watching other games, and will be crowded and rowdy, if that's what you're looking for. I avoid it on game days, but the food is solid enough that all the locals from all the downtown businesses keep it busy at lunch time every day because their menu holds its own, even when there's no sports or drinking involved.
Transmetropolitan - Clayton Street I JUST FOUND OUT IT IS PERMANENTLY CLOSED WTF can someone tell me the story on this? Sorry Tbird, now that Transmet is closed, I can't give you a solid pizza option. Wow. ETA- now called Starland Pizzeria.
Non-breakfast Summary - same as breakfast summary, if you wanted some fancy options with wife, or kid friendly places, I can give those too, but since it's you and college buddies, I made that the focus.

Been closed for a while Rig. Now have to settle for Mellow Mushroom. Big City Bread has good breakfast and a decent burger too

They closed the Oglethorpe Ave location a good while back. Not sure what happened to this one unless they fell victim to trying to do too much with the expansion. Kinda like Five Points Deli.
Never been, but folks recommend Ted’s Most Best a good bit. Amici and Little Italy still exist, right? If you’re willing to go that far for pizza, Peppino’s is my personal jam.

My brother in law worked there a long time, great suggestion for breakfast/brunch, the food is really good. Great suggestion.

The Oglethorpe Ave location had all kinds of problems with the coffee shop they shared the building with, there was lots of drama with that.
But the downtown location had no reason to close, it was always busy, and was very good pizza. The Hungry Sasquatch. May it rest in peace.

One of my family favorites, but not for college buddies, it's more of a family place. Kirby and his family eat there too.

Amici
One of the marquis places that people love, but I have actually never been. Funny thing, it's an italian restaurant but people only ever get the buffalo wings.

That's where I'd send Tbird if I wanted him to get in a fight at 2am.

One of my best friends who has lived in Athens even longer than I have, loves peppino's, but I think it is less than mediocre, especially considering you have to drive to get to it. I think peppenino's success is more about nostalgia from when people were poor college students, than actual food quality. Same reason I wouldn't recommend Taco Stand, even though I love it, it's nostalgia.

Transmet is still part owned by the original folks, just changed the name. I believe you can still get the Sasquatch.
Little Italy is up there with Taco Stand as places that taste and feel like you’ve stepped into a time machine. Just the best.
Amici wings are really solid and probably the best downtown. Pizza isn’t bad, good beer selection.
The Place is the best all around restaurant downtown IMO. Food is good, location and setting are excellent, drinks are a over average.
Mayflower was the right choice for breakfast.
