I’m somewhat amazed at the turn GA fandom has talked over my lifetime.

I barely remember Griffith, so I have no opinion as to that era.

During most of Dooley’s tenure fans were pretty happy for the team to attend a bowl. After a strong start Dooley’s teams were often good, but not great. I would argue one player, HW, changed how most of the fan base now views Dooley.

Goff was a disaster and Donnan was too much of a player’s coach. In both cases the teams were mostly fair to good, never great.

IMO things changed with Richt. For the first time in my life it appeared GA was building a dominant program, not just the occasional very good team. For whatever reason it fell apart. My personal opinion is Richt’s priories changed after his wife’s battle with cancer. Expectations thereafter exceeded Richt’s ability to produce.

Now we have Kirby. “Hometown hero,” excellent recruiter, fierce competitor, pretty good coach and some of the fan base are are becoming are disillusioned with the results because he’s failed to bring home a title. Christ almighty you have to wonder if some folks are ever happy.

For me Kirby has produced. GA generally whips its rivals under Kirby. Who remembers Spurrier grinding the dawgs’ noses in poop every year? Now FL points to the game as a must win. Tech? Not even a game. Tenn? Again, not much of a game. Aubie? All they have is “Cam, It’s an on going investigation” and “1980.”

GA may never win a title under Kirby. The 4-5 top teams are really close in talent. And, frankly, Saban’s a better coach. So, luck will play some role in winning one. Having written that, I’d rather be a GA fan now than at any point in my life, save the HW years. Go Dawgs.

If J.T. can stay healthy, and Georgia knocks off Clemson, Dogs will go into J'ville undefeated. Yea, it ain't never good to give up 40 pts, but since '06, Georgia has had at least one meltdown game every season; that should be rectified this year. On paper, the secondary is one of top-3 best in the nation. Defensively, this season should be Smart's best. We'll see.

Coach Smart is an outstanding recruiter, and defensive coordinator, but hasn't proven to be a great head coach, yet. With the exception of Oklahoma, he hasn't beaten a team with equal or more talent. However, 2021 could be the Year of the Dog if Georgia wins on 9/4/21....a loss probably means Outback Bowl. I was a Dog before Kirby arrived, and I'll be a Dog long after he's gone. GO DOGS!

I would argue that 2017 Auburn had equal or better talent. He was a hairs breadth away from beating Alabama in 2017 and 2018. (True he did not, though)

Does he have a ways to grow and get better? Absolutely, but I still believe i have seen some growth and is very close. He's figuring it out.

I am not sure why you believe this. I don't see us losing an SEC game next year. I typically can see us losing 1 and maybe 2 games, but not next year. We could lose to Clemson early and still make the playoffs.

Our defense got scorched by the two teams we saw who could throw downfield. It's an elite run stopping unit but the pass defense against good offenses has been suspect for a few years now.

We were missing quite a few players when we went up against FL. Bama is one of the greatest offences the we have ever seen. Those games are outliers.

I don't think people understand how important DB and OL recruiting is.

But the problem with DB... you have a 5th best DB out there who can get exposed by NFL talent. Your 3rd to 5th best DBs might be great at blitzing. Might be great at coming downhill against screens and hooks. But can they cover man to man against sunday players?

The answer is no. And that is why great OCs and QBs are able to blast defenses. How many guys can cover Pitts ,Toney, Smith, Waddle, Metchie? Because if your answer is not 5 or 6 guys on your roster... you have vulnerabilities to an explosive offense.

If you put NFL CBs on islands and do not get pressure on the QB, they will get beat. That’s football.

Which is why pass rush is so important. Nolan Smith and Adam Anderson need to step up bigly next season to combat this.

Yes and no.

Bama had max protect with 2 and 3 man routes.
That leaves 7 to 8 guys pass blocking.
It isn't always as simple as saying out OLB need to do better.

Agreed.

What do you get when you put Tyreque McGhee? Malcom parrish? Aaron Davis? Underclassman Tyson Campbell? Divaad Wilson? Mark Webb? Underclassman Lewis Cine? 2020 Tyreque Stevenson?

The point is that pass rush is important. But as fans, expectations and mindsets have to shift.

You want blitzes? You get Lewis Cine in man coverage. And he might be bailing from his safety position to cover the boundary receiver (Trevor grimes or John metchie)

If you're getting torched by 2 man routes and max protection, your defense needs to be better.

If you are in man, you can easily get beat by a 2 or 3 man release. Especially if they are flooding one side. That happens... but Bama ran plenty of 4 and 5 man routes. Especially with that jet and throw back stuff. Same with UF for that matter.

I hate Auburn, but they were hitting on all cylinders at end of 2017 season; after Alabama hurt Kerryon Johnson, they were a completely different team. Had that referee not messed up that blocked punt call in national title game against Alabama, Dogs national title drought would have ended that fateful night.
