Saban made the tough call pulling Hurts for the “unproven” Tua when by your logic, there should’ve been no good reason to do it. Championship.
Swinney made the tough call playing Watson when there was no good reason to pull his starter. Next year: championship. Same thing again with Lawrence over Bryant.
This is an unfair comparison.
At worst Tua would’ve done just as bad as Jalen in the second half (3 for 8, 21 yards).
Also Swinney started Watson after Clemsons national title game hopes was already over in 2014. He also started TLaw after Bryant was ineffective through four games. Easy decisions to make.

You mean like Fromm was ineffective through the first several games of 2018?

The only good thing that comes from this game is we can bump all of the Eddie Gran threads that Kentucky fans started in the off-season

quote:True, yet you don't need that to win a national championship. It certainly helps, but football is a team sport. If Fromm had Bama's WRs, our offense would have been unstoppable.
When the run game got taken away, Fromm wasn't good enough to put the team on his back at any point in his career.
BTW, Hurts was one of those game-changers, until he wasn't. Tua was one of those game-changers, until he wasn't.
quote:I'm certainly not excited.
This has been an absolutley atrocious performance. I'm not sure how anyone can be excited after this.

BTW SCREW the Gators for screwing
up everything with their Covid breakout.
Should have been our off week today and we generally use this week for healing for the WLOCP.
Now we're going limping into Jax
with our best defensive player questionable along with our best
WR probably out.

Preach. The defining moment of Kirby’s tenure might be not starting Fields in the second half of the LSU game that year.

Stetson just said he thought the offense played really well.
My bet is Kirby agrees.
frick my life.

Hurts was never one of those game changers. He was always seen as a shitty passer who could make plays with his legs.

Tua was one of those game-changers, until he wasn't.
The only time Tua wasn't a game changer is when he was hurt.
I just flipped to the BC/Clemson game. I would take either of those QBs over anything on our roster, keeping in mind that Lawrence isn't playing. Boston College has a better QB than Georgia and it isn't because they have a superstar like Matt Ryan. It's because we have FSU level QB play.

Outside of LSU, and then maybe Tennessee, which games would you argue he was ineffective in?

No. You.
I'm not the one on this thread rehashing on old bad decision or blaming this QB situation an a transfer 2 seasons ago that ended up being 100% the right decision for the kid.
This is on Kirby.

WTF are you talking about?
Over a 70% completion with 12 TD's and 2 INT's pre LSU

Fromm threw 9 TDs through 4 games running an old school offense. Bryant had 4 TDs total through 4 games running a supposed high scoring offense.

quote:There was no good reason to bench Fromm. What you're doing is exhibiting hindsight bias. You know how Fields turned out and you are projecting your current knowledge on CKS from the 2018 season. He didn't have the luxury of clairvoyance and did the smart thing by playing his proven QB against someone with potential but who hadn't proven anything at that time.
There’s always a million reasons to pretend that a wrong decision was right. There’s always a reason to not make the tough decision, no matter how right it is. Just like in life, the ones willing to make the tough decisions will see better results than those who choose the safe route.
quote:They have had complete teams. We haven't. We've always missed something. 2017 was our closest we've had in decades to having a complete team and we came up just short because we didn't make the necessary adjustments in the 2nd half.
That’s why Saban and Swinney will keep piling up championship trophies and Kirby will keep hitting his head on a ceiling that he thinks is made of glass when it’s opaque as a mahogany door.
quote:Maybe, maybe not. I'd love to see another Justin Fields (minus the attitude) come here. It looks like CKS was trying to go that direction with Newman and Newman quit a few weeks before the season. We weren't ready to have a backup come in without missing a step in the game plan. That could certainly be pinned on the coaches but it's not like they aren't trying here.
We need a real quarterback. Until we get one, our success will be capped.

Yes. A real quarterback.
shite, I feel like I’m talking to a signpost.

This is the worst take in cfb history and I lose any respect for anyone that says it. Saban didn't make a "tough call". His back was against the wall, he ran out of bullets, he was desperate as all hell, and *literally* had no other choice. Hurts was limited as a passer his entire career and led bama to ZERO points at halftime of the title game and looked bad doing it. It was truly the only choice he had. It just so happened to pay off, but it wasn't some genius strategical move. It was the last gasp of a dying man that ended up working
Posted on 10/31/20 at 2:11 pm to WG_Dawg
When hurts missed the wide open fade in the end zone against us in the first half, Saban had no other choice. He had to make the change.

So pulling your season-long starter for a freshman was the obvious move? Hell, Kirby would’ve never done it.

You are intentionally downplaying the potential angle. We knew what Fromm was. He was a solid college QB. Fields had the potential to be a top 5 draft pick type. We're seeing that play out.
quote:
They have had complete teams. We haven't. We've always missed something
No shite. The difference has been QB play. We've been decent and they've been elite.

Yes. That was the only way Alabama fans (and they’ll admit this) thought they had a chance.

Because I expect the head coach at UGA to know more about quarterback play than me. There are coaches in college football who seem to never miss out on these decisions. Do you think it’s because of a crystal ball? It’s not luck, because it keeps happening over and over again.
