Looking at all the injuries we had. How would we have finished the year? In terms of players alone it was an incredible team

-Aaron Murray
-Todd Gurley
-Keith Marshall
-Malcolm Mitchell
-Michael Bennett
-Justin Scott Wesley

All those guys missed multiple games.

With our defense that year? We might’ve won 10 games postseason included.

Aaron Murray was cheated his senior season in so many ways.

The defense was terrible. It was one of our worst secondaries in recent years.

That healthy team was good enough to win the sec, and play FSU for the national title.

Offensively, yes. We weren't gonna win the SEC with that defense.

We lost to Clemson with almost everyone healthy because they dominated us when they were on offense.

Probably would have been a top 5-10 team. Defense nowhere near good enough to win it all.

Gurley left that game for a time. He either needed fluids or something. He came back. But I think he was cramping after a long run (which might have even been called back with a flag if I remember correctly)

Did you miss uga beating sc and LSU with that defense? Heck, It took a miracle to lose to sec champion auburn.

Our offense was better than our defense was bad.

Mitchell tore his acl and gurley hurt his leg very early in that game. May have been on the same exact play. Long td run.

That woulda been 2014

Obviously don't have Murray but Mason was pretty efficient and we had Gurley,Chubb and Sony at RB and defense was much improved.

Beat 4 ranked teams by an average of 29 pts and lost to unranked UF and SC And blew the GT game. Would've loved to see what that team coulda done vs Bama in the SECCG.

Season was microcosm of CMR's career

Definitely a top 5 UGA offense in history with just a little bit better injury luck. But no, not a top 5 UGA TEAM of all time, even with better injury luck.

Right off the bat you’d have to say Richt’s 02, 05, 07, and 12 teams were probably all better even if 2013 had just an average amount of injuries instead of the carnage we had in 2013.

Throw in the Herschel teams, the 42 champs, 1968, 1992 and 2017 and there’s no way 213 would be in our top five.

With all that said that offense was insanely good. Bobo and Murray at their peak.

2013 had a ton of defensive talent but they were so young. 8 of the 11 defensive starters left after 2012.

Leonard Floyd was a demigod.

Grantham was also considered a mastermind until the 2013 season when he became 3rd and frickit. Mainly because the young secondary were getting torched and pushed around. Front7 was still damn good.

It is trendy to mock Grantham, and I do a lot of it myself, but he did an excellent job with our D in 2011. 2012 I’d argue he had more flaws but still solid work. As you said, the 2013 problems were mostly limited to one unit (DBs) but that was just truly unacceptable. For the DBs to be THAT bad changed a lot of minds on Grantham.

Plus it was inexcusable crap like not being lined up coming out of a kickoff, or always being out of position. That is normally on coaching.

Sorry, but every time I read this thread title I get a headache.

"Could 2013 possibly be one of our Top 5 best teams?"

So many ways to phrase this in a way that wouldn't have made this appear to be happening in the present. Arrrgh!

For example:
"Would the 2013 UGA team be one of the top 5 teams in UGA history?"

"The scheme was too complicated!"

But it wasn't too complicated in 2011 or 2012.

People keep forgetting 2013 defense had 3 returning starters and several freshmen. They aren't going to play like upperclassmen.

Keith Marshall

Marshall was a highly rated recruit but in terms of on field production he was very sub-par. After he tore his ACL he couldn't absorb contact to save his life.

He was very good prior to that injury.

Not wholeheartedly disagreeing, but having Jarvis Jones helped Grantham's cause tremendously. Obviously you could expect a drop off on any defense when you lose a talent like Jones, but Jones' presence in 2011 and 2012 masked some issues with Grantham then. In my opinion, anyway.

I

There was also a big difference between our 2011 and 2012 defenses.'12 was one of the worst rushing defenses in UGA history.
Gave up almost 100 yards per game more on the ground.
