One thing about HUNH offenses is by design they are quick-strike, move-fast offenses that typically result in getting on the field, and then getting off in abrupt fashion. The trick for opposing defenses is in dictating that they get off on loss of downs, and not after scoring TDs...

UNC, USC's season-opening opponent, was ranked 117th out of 120 FBS programs last season in offensive time of possession. Clemson was ranked 88th. Both head coaches (sorry.....in Clemson's case, I guess he's just an OC) have vowed to SPEED UP their offensive plays, if anything. Both teams also offer highly suspect passing defenses, total defenses, and SEC-caliber depth on defense.

IMO, it's paramount that both USC and UGA take advantage of these known factors. We have monstrous SEC OLs, and deep RB depth. We are both proficient at running the ball (in USC's case at least decently). Last season, USC totally dictated the tempo of our game vs Clemson by keeping the ball on the ground and converting 3rd downs (11 of 21). We constantly attacked the CU backfield, forcing Boyd to rush his throws, especially on known passing downs and limited their own 3rd down conversions (5 of 12).

IMO if UGA can do the same, with opportunistic pass plays against their weak secondary, UGA will control the scoring tempo and should at least take the early lead. That will then force CU to go to the air more often which will make their offense one-dimensional. Big question here is can UGA's own secondary at least contain Clemson's passing attack. IMO Clemson's own DL will wear down if UGA can maintain control of TOP, and then with a wore out DL and a noneffective secondary, they'll collapse in the 2nd half.

That's how USC did it. LSU chose to go a different route, for some reason...

That's the whole point of the thread.

Swann and Matthews as safety/nickel.

Who are the other 3 cheetah people for UGA that are going to keep receivers locked down vs Clemson?

With our top four safeties all out of commission currently, if Deas, Matthews, Fluker and Moore are not ready to go, and JHC is out, can we make it with Norman, Mauger and Johnson? Can Lucas Redd cover the Tigers?

Clemson is licking their chops, too. We have a bunch of guys in the secondary who will have missed about half of preseason due to various nagging injuries...and of course one guy who's looking great (Harvey-Clemons) won't be allowed to play.

Clemson knows it is going to have all sorts of opportunities to test inexperienced Georgia defensive backs in first game of the season.

Our only solution to this is that we get incredible defensive line play...and also hope that our offense is practically unstoppable... Neither of those are a given.

Let's hope Langley and Fluker are instant impact guys....

Damian Swann has heard the doubters, those who suggest that Clemson and quarterback Tajh Boyd will light the Georgia secondary up like a Christmas Tree.

Considering who the Bulldogs graduated off of last year's squad, it's easy to see why some may think that way.

But to the former Grady High star, those are fighting words.

"Nobody straps it on but us, nobody gets on that field but us," Swann said. "When it's time to get between those white lines, we've just got to show up. We'll be ready, we'll be fine."

Head coach Mark Richt obviously hopes that's the case.
Following practice Friday, Richt admits he's concerned how much a recent run of injuries in Georgia's secondary has kept some key personnel off the field.

While most of the injuries have occurred at safety where Tray Matthews, Corey Moore and Shaquille Fluker were each on Georgia's post-practice injury report, cornerback Sheldon Dawson (shoulder sprain) missed Friday's workout due to a shoulder sprain.

He hasn't been alone.

Freshman Shaq Wiggins missed around a week with a groin injury, although he's now back and along with fellow freshman Brendan Langley are getting tons of reps to get them prepared for what's to come.

"They're still learning and they haven't got complacent," Swann said. "They've been averaging almost a pick a day. That's a confidence builder for them and I think that's what they need when it comes down to the situation."

Both Wiggins and Langley intercepted passes in last week's scrimmage, with Langley also breaking up a pass in the end zone to prevent a score.

"I've made some plays here and there, and done some not-so-great things here and there," Langley said prior to the scrimmage. "I'm like the rest of everybody else, just work toward our goal."

Langley said Bulldog coaches are giving him looks at boundary corner, field corner, along with star.

"It's pretty much everything," he said. "They've got me moving around a pretty good bit."

At 6-foot-2 and 181 pounds, Langley said he feels he's able to hold his own, although getting used to covering bigger receivers like Jonathon Rumph and Justin Scott-Wesley has proven quite challenging.

"It's a little different when you have a receiver as big as Rumph coming down on you full speed looking to get off the block," he said. "It's definitely a big challenge."

However, he feels strides are being made.

"Physicality-wise, I think I'm doing a good job. There's been a couple of holding calls here and there, but we're not going to worry about that right now," Langley said. "Everybody is going to be physical, I like that. I like being a physical corner and to make a big hit. I'm definitely still learning but I feel good about where I am."

Junior college transfer Kennar Johnson is also expected a key role, and supplement the Bulldog cornerback position with Dawson, plus veterans Devin Bowman and Blake Sailors.

"I would say they're probably in the same boat," Swann said of Johnson, Wiggins and Langley. "They're all competing and getting nearly the same amount of reps. It's just one of those things where a guy has to prove he deserves that spot but I think with those young corners we'll be fine regardless of the situation just because of the scheme that we have."

However, he knows slowing Boyd won't be easy.

"He's (Boyd) one of the best in the country but you can't allow him to do what he wants to do," Swann said. "You can't allow him to sit back there and sling it, and you can't allow him to hurt you with his feet. We've just got to play fundamental football."

But will even that be enough?

"We'll have to find out. That's everybody's quest, what can this young secondary do against Clemson," Swann said. "Come Aug 31, we'll find out."

The front 7 have to have a good game, the DL has to get some pressure & the OLB's gotta contain & hold the edge....

You've got to hope that having a 240 # OLB is the same as #275 DE Clowney.

Jarvis Jones basically did that.

WIll Jenkins, or Stripling, or Floyd?

If you can rush your 3 DL and a sack machine OLB, and collapse the pocket quickly, consistently, while keeping the receivers covered, and have Herrera and Wilson just standing there smoking a cigarette waiting for Boyd to make a move, then we'll have no problem.

If the receivers aren't covered, and the DL can't collapse the pocket immediately, Clemson will win by 21+ points. I'm not convinced we'll be able to do either.

Who are Clemson's WRs that are gonna be a threat for us? Throw D Swann on S Watkins and then who else will they have? I know we might be new in the 2ndary but who is Clemsons WRs that are gonna be a threat for our young dbs?

I heard on the bill shank show (sp) where J Rowe said that when clemson played FSU, 71% of their their players that got rushing and receiving yds are no long with the team. So obviously they are losing a lot on offense as well.

I think we should be worried, but not that worried. Our offense is gonna help us out a lot, if they don't, then we need to start worrying.

But Swann is filling in for JHC in the nickel spot so .....

And just to remind you, Swann got burned by Amari Cooper last year, he is our best corner that we know of, but he isn't exactly all-SEC.

Sammy Watkins is an elite receiver.

Deeprig, you are sounding more and more like redcoat everyday. Look, we have a clowney-esque player in Deloach, a little bigger than Clowney and almost as fast. This game will not be the shootout some are saying it will be, and the Dawgs will control top heavily and will be able to put plenty of points on the board. UGA wins this game by 25+ and makes a statement out of the gate.

Well, damn. I didn't see it that way. You've given me alot to think about. Wow. I'm going to have to rethink my philosophy about this game.

Hmmm. A Clowney-esque player. Clowney-esque. Deloach. Hmmmm....

A 3* rated prospect...

Deloach (first yr. of active duty 2012):

13 gms/0 starts, 4 total tackles (all 4 assists), 0 TFL, 0 Sacks, 0 FF, 2 QBP

Clowney (first yr. of active duty 2011):

13 gms/1 start, 36 total tackles, 12.0 TFL, 8.0 Sacks, 5 FF, 6 QBP

Cockway, please ignore Firewind when it comes to matters of football. He is not representative of our fanbase, and much less representative of our program.

What this sounds like to me is a DC making excuses in advance when his D does not perform. A little preemptive "don't fire me" for when his D is just as shitty as it always was at OU.
