This whole 12-16 team playoff system was supposed to encourage more PvP OOC games. Playing Oregon, Clemson, and ND didn't hurt us at all....it actually brought in more visibility. They were all prime-time TV games with a national audience. Nobody watched our first two games this year.
I'm not saying we should play elite-level contenders OOC every year, I'm saying we should not play any FCS teams ever, and should instead schedule lower level P4 teams and maybe some top Go5 teams instead. We gain nothing by playing Austin Pea or Tenn St.

I enumerated multiple costs in my post above. Those cost us home games. That's gate revenue, concessions revenue, local revenue, recruiting opportunities, fan opportunities to attend a game, season ticket value. Not to mention that every game of that caliber increases the risk of an extra loss. That means less non-starter game experience, higher risk of starter injury, and an absolute reduction in the odds of making the playoffs.
If the increased visibility you cite outweighed the other costs, there would be no P4 vs G6/FCS games. No P4 football program does what you recommend because it would hurt them and it would hurt UGA too.

Sorry, that's incorrect. The benefits of those games are the flip side of the costs listed in my first paragraph above.

I do not think we should schedule unnecessary P4 games. We are required to have 1 and it is GT annually. It is an important traditional rivalry.
I do think UGA should focus on instate G5/FCS opponents. Georgia Southern, GA State, Kennesaw St, Mercer, West GA. Don’t know if I missed any.

I think this thread will be interesting to look at 4 years from now.
With the 12 team playoff, regular seasons are dead.
College football was the sport where the regular season meant the most.
It will take a bit for the fan mindset to catch up.
You want UGA vs Clemson/NotreDame/Ohio State/Louisville matchups? Beat them in the playoffs.
Anything that hurts playoff chances will linger long in the minds of the fans going forward.
Weeks 1-12 are opportunities to get right for December/January.
No one puts up banners for 2nd place.

For years, I've been a vocal advocate for discontinuing the GT series, but more recently I apparently overlooked (or forgot) the new requirement for SEC teams to have one OOC P4 game. Under that scenario, I'm now fine with keeping GT. I'd also be fine with dropping it and having a more diverse schedule, or moving GT to the 1st game of the season to placate those who complain our early schedule had too many cupcakes.
But now some on here (and, not coincidentally, some rival fans) are moving the goalposts and saying UGA needs to schedule other P4 opponents too, or even all P4 opponents. That's completely illogical. The fact that nobody else does that on a regular basis is summary evidence that it is considered to be counterproductive.
