I have nothing to add to this thread. WG and meansonny are speaking for me. Yall are my consigliaires on this subject.
I've taken my son to games since he was 3, he's now 11. It's always a cupcake game because-
Early kickoff
Cheap tickets, even for good seats
We always win (though Kent State made us work for it)
Finding free parking is easier
The whole stadium and town isn't crawling with shitfaced drunks
You can actually get into a restaurant before and after the game
Only a true a-hole would want to take that away from us.
We couldn't do a cupcake this year because we were on vacation for both of our cupcakes.
I hope we can get into a cupcake game next year.

It literally is an opponent who is willing to visit your university for a paycheck and not demand a return visit.
You think we are going to schedule home only games with other P4 schools?
You think season ticket holders are going to give more to the university for less on return?
We already sacrifice 1 home game per year every year with the commitment to Jacksonville and the Jackets. You want to give away more?
Or are we scheduling cupcakes who don't require the return trip.
And I questioned precisely none of that. To fill the first three weeks of a fifteen week season with largely irrelevant games simply does not make for much in the way of good viewing - that's all. Understanding the why doesn't change that result. Even spreading the massacre games out across the season would make it better, since there would still be a solid slate of good games every Saturday. But to just burn 20% of the season on essentially nothing games with relatively few good matchups thrown in? Not a great plan.

You get that anyway. It just makes no sense to waste the first three weeks of a short season playing a whole bunch of games that are irrelevant. Spread them out across the schedule so that there's always a slate of good matchups every weekend.

That is an SEC request. They schedule the conference games. Whatever is left over is available for the athletic departments to fill out.
I watch a lot of podcasts. Nationally, cupcake games in october and November are frowned upon. Personally, I dont really care when the cupcakes are played. I have an opinion based on tradition when I think we should play South carolina, Florida, Kentucky, Auburn, and georgia tech. The other games, the positioning doesn't mean anything to me.
