I would have to agree if there are kids involved.

Our honeymoon was actually at a bed and breakfast in Asheville, though. Beautiful place. Has probably changed a lot since we haven't been up there since that time, which was 2002. I recall a place we ate at called The Flying Frog. It's closed down now, but damn that place was good.

I learned something on a sports message board today. I know about the Blue Ridge Mountains and have driven on the Blue Ridge Parkway several times but did not know about the city of Blue Ridge.

Edit: And I agree with Asheville being a neat place—been there a few times. You can eat at the world’s classiest McDonalds.

Ha, that's in Biltmore Village. We always stay at the Grand Bohemian in Asheville and that McDonald's is right across the street. It always makes me laugh at how churched up it is.

Yes it’s pretty neat. I’m not that big on McDonalds but like their biscuits and gravy every now and then.

But when we saw that one we just had to stop and eat there.

But be prepared for a lot of "Subaru's" and "Obama/Biden" stickers.

And those would be the conservative residents. Stalin spent a week in Asheville and thought it was "a little too communist."

Avoid Gatlinburg except maybe for a day trip just to experience the definitive Smoky Mountain tourist trap.

I used to rent a cabin every year for the family in Blowing Rock, NC.

I highly recommend you check it out. Awesome little mountain town.

Asheville has some great beers brewing but it is very liberal. I'll grab the beer and go.

If you’re going to do it, do it right. Go to Highlands or Cashiers, NC.

So what's a good place for a family trip where there are three kids, ages 10, 6 and 2?

Looking at Blue Ridge, Blowing Rock, Asheville, etc., those all appear to cater to a more mature crowd. Beer/wine, fly fishing, hiking, etc not being important (nor viable), what's good?

you are right. most of those places to cater to the older crowd just looking to get away. Since kids are involved, they might need a place like Gattlinburg AKA The Carnival Ship of the Smokey's as another poster said just so there is more younger entertainment available. If you are going when it is warm enough to swim, the mountains would be fine because there are lakes and river tubing/floating activities that would be available.

Do you think Gatlinburg is the best bet? I've been there, so I know what I get with that. That said, I was curious if there are other options.

Have you considered Chattanooga? It has some kid-friendly things to do without being a tourist trap like Gatlinburg.

I've spent quite a bit of time in both areas. Gatlinburg is fun but it's really touristy. The plus is you have the Smoky Mts right nearby and you can go up for a drive or hike. I used to go up for church retreats in both areas. Blue Ridge is pretty quite and not quite as much to do. The area I really enjoy for a mountain getaway is Brevard, NC. There's ton of waterfalls in the area - they filmed Last of the Mohicans and Hunger Games in that area. Then it's a short drive up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Lots of nice little quaint restaurants and stuff to do in Brevard with a lot less crowd than Asheville. If you go on Airbnb you can rent a nice little cottage in this area called Sherwood Forest. Great little par 3 course there and it's beautiful. Then it's a really short drive over to Asheville - 45 minutes. Any one of the mentioned areas is good - if you go on a non-holiday weekend - check Airbnb - you can find a full cottage for rent for pretty cheap - probably around 100 dollars a night.

Lake Guntersville State Park in Alabama is a great family trip. Stay in the lodge, in one of the chalets, or one of the lakeside cabins. Take the kids to the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville (25 miles away), Harmony Park Safari for the kids (13 miles away), golf or zip lining in the park. There is a very nice beach for swimming.
Huntsville has several breweries as well.
The town of Guntersville has several nice restaurants and the same for Huntsville.
