Taking my wife to the mountains in February, and I heard these are two of the better spots in the southeast to go too. Which would you recommend?

I'll be up around blue ridge this weekend, I'll let you know my thoughts.

Blue Ridge is great little town. Gatlinburg can get trashy, but is probably the better bet if you have kids that need to be entertained.
So, if it's just you and the wife, then go to Blue Ridge. There are some great wineries in the area (I like Chateau Meichtry, and Monteluce is great if you don't mind driving over to Dahlonega), a couple of breweries in BR, and some really good restaurants.

Blue Ridge. I haven't been in some years but we used to go every winter to get away from the rat race. 3/4 of the county is national forest. You can get lost.... Less commercialized and you are not far from other cool places to visit in NC and TN.

Blue Ridge. Gatlinburg is a Carnival cruise ship parked in the Smokey Mountains.

They all suck IMO, take her to Asheville, NC.

There is a TON to do. Breweries are everywhere, Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway are right there. I go up there fly fishing a few times a year. Lots of shopping for the lady. The Biltmore. Grove Park Inn. Just a lot of stuff to do, but no where near as trashy as Gatlinburg.

Blue Ridge.
Gatling is fun but yeh kind of touristy and lots of Jorts.
Check out Highlands NC. Old Edwards Inn. If a wife and husband thing.
Awesome....
Asheville is great, lots of great breweries, music and food. But be prepared for a lot of "Subaru's" and "Obama/Biden" stickers.

Actually I'm sorry, I can't give you any input. I will be up that way but it's for a bachelor party so we will probably just be in our home base the whole time and not really "hit the town", so I probably can't give you any good recommendations.

I'd take Blue Ridge all day over Gatlinburg for all of the reasons others have already mentioned, especially if it is just you and the lady.
I stopped by Grumpy Old Men brewery a couple months ago when I was last in Blue Ridge and was really really impressed- had at least 12 beers on tap and I tried as many as I could and none of them disappointed and all were in fact above par in my opinion. Some good eats around town too.

Asheville has the dank and the breweries.
If you want upscale food go to rhubarb.
Edit: damn you plan ahead homie. 11 months away!!

I like Gatlinburg. If you hate crowds, then yeah, go with Blue Ridge, but that doesn't bother me.
Plus, Cherokee's only 20-30 minutes away.

Old Edwards at The Highlands, NC would be my pick as well.

My brother lives in Blue Ridge. I take a youth basketball team to Gatlinburg twice a year.
I would skip both of these locations and head to Asheville

Yea I usually have all my vacations planned about a year ahead, that way I have my choice of places to stay and can learn a lot about the area and things to do there. I get 4 weeks of vacation a year, so that's a lot to plan at the last moment

This is spot on. Blue Ridge is nice for a quiet get away quaint spot. Would probably skip Gat...
Asheville is generally a hit with the ladies for things like Biltmore, small boutique shops, foodie town, etc... Bonus, amazing fricking beer.
I would start from a standpoint of what do you want to do with your time, what does your wife enjoy... Asheville is more of a city obviously... but not like Atlanta or Charlotte or anything. What you want to do would definitely color my personal recommendation for you... but if you're neutral/open - it's Asheville all day long.
