Is this kid going to get some reps this year? He was a 5* at one time, and all I'm hearing is our online is our biggest question mark but no buzz on Big Ben. What gives?

Kid played mostly defense in high school. Came in with lots of upside but he needed to hone his skill as an ol.

Was rated as a 5 star early due to upside was bumped down to high 4-star by most services due to how raw he was. Only saw spot duty along the OL as a senior in HS and spent most of his time as a DL. Not an easy position to learn and not easy to master proper technique, either. With the influx of interior line talent, though, he's going to need to learn quickly.

Depending on what type of Dawg you are, please select the proper answer below:

A) he's going to be a badass for us moving forward now that's being developed

B) he's a pile of shite that played Dline in high school and can't learn the footwork and levregde to be a OT

C) we don't know and will see how his development goes and could produce for UGA in the next 2 years

We need Dlineman. Move him back. Might never have a chance with Pittman recruiting.

He went to my high school(Stephens County) so I watched him play a lot.

As other have said, he didn't get a ton of experience on o-line until his senior year. Then it was more just his size and strength, he didn't have the technique down.

If Pittman is half as good as they say, he could make Big Ben into a GREAT linemen. I'm very excited to see how he has progressed this year.

I think the problem is a guy like Kindley is basically the same size and position but didn't have to learn a new position. And we r recruiting line so well idk if he will be able to catch up to learning curve. I hope he can. He's definitely a first off the bus guy.

Too stiff for DL.

He could still be a good OL. Plenty of time for him to develop and contribute, even if it isn't this season.

I'm really really pulling for Ben, but I just don't see how he fits in. Currently it seems the coaches are set on leaving him at tackle. We have Wynn and a JUCO, plus 2 TFr that are likely the future. Whose reps does he take? Say we move him to guard, he's got Kindley, Allen, Netori, and Shaffer that are either ahead of or at least equal to him now, with potentially Salyer and Hill (potential C though) coming next year.

I want the dude to succeed but with the massive influx of excellent OL I just don't see who he's going to displace, assuming of course most of these guys are as good as advertised.

I heard Sage is softer than butter. As for Ben, I expect him to get some pt this year and next year should be the year where he either takes control of a starting role of begins to fade.

He had a really bad injury in spring practice, didn't get off crutches until like midway through June. Also I think his weight is in the 240-250 range, so pretty unlikely he contributes much this year.

He's still 18 after a redshirt with insane size and strength. He should show noticeable signs by his soph season.

Kendall Baker and Ben Cleveland were DL in HS, but struggle in college with the transition to OL.
The same for Mecole Hardman (played offense in HS but has struggled at CB).

Not every player is going to be great their freshmen and sophomore seasons. But keeping these guys in their favorite positions could allow them to flourish by the time they are juniors and seniors where they have felt more natural all along. Sometimes, a solid upper-classman is what we need instead of trying to place square pegs (freshmen) into round holes (where they may best project to play as 25-28 year old professionals).

What about Sam Madden?

Are you asking if he will get reps?

Or comparing him to Cleveland?

Madden played OL in high school and he was rated as a 3 star because of his on field performance. To me, Madden is like Pyke but with a different skillset (size/strength vs agility/athleticism). If these guys start as upper-classmen and hold their own, then they are outperforming what you should expect from them (i.e. don't expect all conference and high draft picks). If we are recruiting and developing well, these guys are depth and a good hat to work against the first teamers on defense.
