Since he admitted it, the University should make him an example as they did. We can't change attitudes by letting those that do bad things believe it is ok.

The fact they find that racist, is hilarious. He was yelling for the team to put a black player in over the white starter.....a racist wouldn’t want a black QB in there

ETA: Dawgsfan, he admitted he said it and apologized. This is not worthy of being removed from the team. Should any kid underage drinking be kicked off their sports teams? I mean, that is against the law!!! We can have law breakers getting away with this and there needs to be an example made

What Sasser did is worse than stealing from a teammate. There was no choice other than dismissal.

I've already made my opinion on this whole thing known and am not surprised, nor terribly upset at the outcome. I think it would have been better to try and work through an alternate resolution, but optics in 2018 for a Southern school being what they are... it makes sense...

However...

WTF are you talking about. Stealing from a teammate is somehow "less bad" than using a derogatory word while (probably) drunk in the stands at a football game? This appears to be some next level dipshittery. Please help me understand your position.

they support each other all the time with that word. The fact you don’t understand or know that, takes out all your credibility.

What an absurd claim. They absolutely do not do this. There is a big difference in the meaning between the word that ends with a “er” and the word that ends with an “a”. I have already explained that ITT.

Your arguments are beyond absurd. Trying to defend a UGA student who called the QB a n****r is pathetic, regardless of the context.

If they kick every player off the team who uses this world, we won’t have many players.

I bet no one uses the N word that ends in an “er”.

Because they can't annunciate it properly.

The word that ends with an “a” is easy to pronounce

It's the same word regardless whether it's pronounced with an "a" or an "er" at the end. If a white guy calls a black guy that word changing the pronunciation away from "er" would not make the slur acceptable.

Social rules don't always make perfect sense. Blacks can say it no matter the pronunciation. Whites can't say it at all but, in literary works, the word is available to all.

The connotation clearly differs depending on the spelling of it.

Had he said it while wearing said uniform, the school would have a stronger position.

The movie "Pool Hall Junkies" addressed this very issue, and did so quite well.

This is the only thing I really have a problem with. Even on this website, posters regularly use slurs for every other race and no one gives a shite. You write the n word, you're done. I hear Asian slurs regularly spoken by black people. They don't give a frick. Why should I?

I'm surprised this thread is so long and the opinions so varied.

My thought is: The context counts. The guy is at a university athletic event. He's in public. The girl who posted about it on Facebook was at the game with two close friends, who happened to be black. They (among others nearby) had to listen to this guy. Add to that, he's a scholarship athlete for UGA.

There can be debates about free expression and level of punishment, but it's hard for me to buy into any argument that his behavior could or should be overlooked or warranting a slap on the wrist.

Now maybe I don't understand current 20-year-olds. Maybe in Sasser's mind, what he was saying was somehow funny or harmless. But I'll bet most around him, regardless of age, were embarrassed for him.

As far as the word itself, I happen to think that if he had gotten the attention of the University for yelling any derogatory term that's associated with Field's race, the result would have been the same. For the reasons mentioned.

And yes, if the QB happened to be Hispanic and Sasser was yelling, "Put in the {derogatory term for Hispanics}!", I think the result would have been the same in that situation, too.

I don't think this is a political correctness issue. What organization would tolerate this from someone who is in effect its representative?
