State pride seems to just be a rural south thing, IMO.

I wouldn't say that it's a rural thing, it's more of a native vs transplant thing. I was born and raised in Marietta, as were my parents. 3 of my grand parents were born in Georgia and I had ancestors in the state since before The War. I'm proud of being a Georgian (and a graduate of the University), even though I don't reside there any longer, but I was technically raised in a suburban/urban area. It's not about the size of the town you were born in, it's your ties to the state.

I was from South Georgia. I grew up in a poor run down drug riddle area. I couldn't wait to get the frick out of the state or as far away from my hometown as possible. The only reason I ever go back is to visit my family. Now, I grew up watching Georgia, Atlanta etc so I became fans of those teams but I don't think state pride is something everyone treasures. There are some parts of Georgia that absolutely suck dick.

This. Having extensive roots in one area (like mine and Crispy's) makes you pretty devoted to that area and the representatives of that area ( The Dawgs, Braves, etc.). That doesn't mean you can't also be devoted to one of those teams if you're not from GA or haven't been here long genealogically speaking, but it does make it less likely that a general population of people with fewer ties or roots to the are are going to remain loyal to that area. ATL knew what it was getting when it opted to build itself into the Reconstruction capital of the South. We get all the business and notoriety but much less of the loyalty than the surrounding states (except Florida because they're like twenty states/nations/countries scrunched into one phallus -shaped landmass).

Yeah I'm not trying to turn this into "RABBLE RICHT CANT RECRUIT GEORGIA, WERE ALWAYS LOSING TOP RECRUITS, etc" it does seem odd and I hate it.

What is Lowndes saying about Godwin, Slayton and Smith?
Posted on 2/3/15 at 12:28 pm to GeorgiaBoy
Yeah, loved to hear what he thinks but I think his silence just says no one knows for sure.
