Some of the better reads I could find on Elko.

The 4-2-5
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

Flexibility

ND Turnaround

Scheme

LINK

Here's a link of Jimbo's O vs Elko's D that I found over at TexAgs.

FSU wins the game but Elko's D essentially shuts down Jimbo's O.

Looking at that video for 5 min it was clear his 3rd saftey flies around... the other thing was guys were always making contact with the ball carrier at the line of scrimmage and defense outnumbered blockers. Also noticed though that the back is just a beast and would break tackles which might have been attributed to skill of Athlete at FSU vs WF.

TLDR: He gets his guys in position to make plays and players looked like they knew what to expect pre snap.

EDIT: Who is a good fit for us at his Rover and 3rd Saftey... where do we see the Returning guys Plugging in?

I need to read up more on what they expect the rover to do. From the first article, it looks like he lines up over the inside receiver most of the time. Maybe Derrick Tucker could fill that role.

I am mostly excited about his recruiting. Apparently he was the closer for their defensive class.

I am the opposite. What makes me happy about this hire is how well he's done without elite talent and how quickly ND improved. I fully expect to be competitive on defense vs anyone. Sure there will be games that get out of hand here or there, but we won't ever score 50+ and lose.

ND went from to 378.8/27.8 to 369.2/21.5. So its a small improvement in yards, but a significant one in points. Not to mention the '16 ND team faced an SOS of 57 while the '17 squad faced the 2nd toughest in the land.

Agree to a point.

but I still stand by thought that Texas no longer places enough emphasis on defense and we are seeing high school players who are significantly behind their offensive counterparts.

Barton Simmons tweeted some of the attributes he brings to our program. Teacher is one of them. To me, this is one of the most underrated qualities for a coach. A great scheme guy who can clearly communicate his vision gets results.

Technically he runs a 4-2-5 but his fifth DB effectively functions as a third linebacker. Unlike the 4-2-5 many mid-majors and TCU run, his is very distinct from a nickel package.

Donovan Wilson will be a returning 5th year senior and is pretty much the perfect fit for such a role.

Watching film of Elko's defenses, he also likes using a safety as one of his linebackers in a true nickel defense when the offense has three wide and a TE on the field.

Elko uses a system that is rooted in a base 4 man front which the players clearly know well. I thought the rover was going to be the wildcard, moving around and giving the base defense a different look and some unpredictability. Turns out I was wrong. The rover’s responsibilities are pretty static in the base defense. When Elko wants to change things up and add some wrinkles on 1st and 2nd down he tends to stay in a 4 man front and activate the safeties. It’s hard to predict what they will do on any given play. They might stay deep, they might come down towards the line of scrimmage, they might play man to man or they might blitz.

I would think Wilson would be better used in one of the safety positions vs the rover. Rover seems like it needs to be more of a coverage LB. I probably want more size.

edit: just checked ND's depth chart. Both listed under Rover we're 6'2" 230. Wake's 2016 (Aug) depth chart shows 6'1" 215 and 6'3" 225.

The wonderful thing is we both get what we want!

Really I feel like he is a 11/10 hire.

Size and coverage skills? How about Myles Jones? He will need to live in the weight room / nutrition center. Okeke has the right size. Chattman too. He should be an ideal candidate to add some good weight.

Maybe Hines or Buddy. Donovan is big enough to play in the box like he did in 2015/2016, but it may be easier to find a 3rd LB than a 3rd safety.
