Today's game felt off in all 3 phases of the game.

The offense should have had at least 3 more touchdowns

The defense showed some serious weakness in the secondary and the middle.

The special teams had a massive epic fail on that onside kick

They looked like they were sleepwalking from the 1st quarter on.

And yet... Taylor Bertolet is perfect on PATs and FGs. How weird is that?

I agree, though. A few superlative plays surrounded by a lot of meh. Right now runs up the middle against our D concern me more than anything else.

Can't argue with that, and won't.

The 2 glaring problems sticking its ugly head out is 1) pass protection and 2) red zone offense. Both were not impressive today, imo

Im not too worried about the defense, but it seemed we took plays off in the 2nd half. Hate to see that become a habit.

Yep. Feel the same. Here is my post from the game thread.

This should have been a 35 point win with second team seeing a lot of play time. hopefully just one of those games but it has a bad feel to it...

Yep. Felt totally off kilter. Brilliant one play and pathetic the next. The inconsistency today was just weird.

Still, it's a win, and the coaches will have lots to work on next week.

Ohio St leading N. Illinois 13-10, 3rd quarter. Talk about "off".

It must have been the heat. Even the FTAB was off a bit. I saw some pretty ragged lines in the first 30 seconds of the routine.

We looked like shite today, I know we scored a bunch but we should've put a hundred on these guys with the 2nd string. We have issues and it's gonna be a long year. I expected a lot more from this offense and they aren't playing like they should be.

If our D can't stop Ball State's and Nevada's RB, what's Fournette going to get on us? 300?

we definitely have issues but i dont know about it being a long year. we are at least going to get to 8 wins. but MSU, bama, ole miss, and LSU are definitely not looking fun

I think the word of the day was inconsistency. We moved the ball, but then we got sloppy in the red zone. We dailed up pressure, but we got beat or got flagged. We had guys in position, but we missed open field tackles. We couldn't put everything together today, but all in all it could be a lot worse. We could have lost to Tech or Toledo.

Our coaches have very different goals and objectives than our fanbase in these games vs overmatched opponents. We don't really gameplan much for them and instead use it as a live practice

Offensively:
1) get several players who haven't really done much some positive vibes. Speedy scored. Ratley got a number of good touches. We really tried to force a TD to RSJ kinda late because he doesn't have one yet this year. It's about making sure all the players are involved and having fun

2) work on plays and sets that we either haven't used or that need some practice. We worked on a bunch set (which looked devastating vs Nevada's man free) and the 12 personnel set (which I wasn't impressed with). We also tried a new goalline set. We ran an awful lot of zone read because we need live practice of it but we only ran the speed option once because it was executed perfectly and we really don't need Allen taking big hits

Defensively
1) get live game reps for the 3 who were playing their first game - Obioha, Henderson, Hilliard - and anyone else that hasn't had a lot of reps but we're now focusing on as rotation guys - Mack, Alaka, George, Lockhart

2) don't get anyone hurt

Last week we showed a few new sets and ran a lot of waggles and it was too successful tbh. We didn't run any of that this week nor did we use Kirk. We could run little screens to Kirk or jet sweeps and Nevada doesn't have the personnel to run with him. But there's no value in just rolling right up the field against an overmatched opponent.

We also got the iso on Reynolds over and over in the bunch but we didn't go to it because it would be absurd having Reynolds just run the route tree. Nevada simply didn't have a corner that could cover him in man. We threw it once (and I think Allen telegraphed it) but if you watch that TD, it was clear Allen was looking off the safety (completely unnecessary as the Nevada free didn't have the range to get there).

We're about to be a month into the season and our first team offense barely got 30 plays last week. Doing that again was not an objective at all. It was practice.

We could have scored 100 in 3 plays drives like the Carson,Kirk, Reynolds series all day.

That doesn't help us going forward though, and no one in conference is affected by the scores we put up against Nevada/ball.

Glad you're here for some perspective, otherwise I'm just pumping out koolaid

Actually tmc I do understand that but inconsistent play and lousy oline play shouldn't be happening even in a "practice" game. I'm sorry but there are to many unanswered questions with this team and I'm not sold one bit. I've bought in since we moved to the SEC but that's over the only thing that will be acceptable is results, not hype. If the team can't put it together it's time to make some changes. This is just my opinion and I expect to get blown up for it but it's how I feel.
