Last thing I remember, it was 2011 and Billy Kennedy had just been hired as our head basketball coach. I wake up this morning and my wife tells me it’s 2019 and Kennedy has just been fired. She also introduced me to children who she says are mine, but I’m very suspicious of everything right now.
As my favorite adversary has noted, I’ve been absent for a couple months. Still lurking, but I’m retired from posting for reasons unrelated to A&M basketball. Believe it or not, when we’re doing poorly it was the easiest time to post. However, I feel that given the recent event, a post was in order to explain some things.
Like most Ags, I’m a fair weather basketball fan. I was a student during the BCG years, but stopped paying attention again towards the end of Turgeon’s tenure.
When this board opened (2013?), it was the middle of basketball season and not many of you were around. If you were, you saw that this board was one thing and one thing only: Threads started by CGSC complaining about Kennedy. To himself. Literally just a page of like 12 threads all about the same topic.
So I took it upon myself to take the other side of the coin. I didn’t watch any of the games, but I’d open up the game summary afterwards and start making the case for why it wasn’t BK’s fault. He can only get the guys in position, they have to make the shots. He’s told the guys to stop shooting so many 3s. It takes a few years to soak up Kennedy’s genius. Those sorts of things.
Well it was apparently entertaining for some of you Ags. The board activity started to pick up. So I kept it up. Then came House’s first year and I started paying attention. With the next year’s recruiting class, I knew we were going to be good and started paying a lot of attention like any good fair weather fan. I truly enjoyed those few years.
The punchline of all this is everyone’s question: was I trolling? The answer: sort of.
First and foremost, I do think it’s ridiculous to root against the Ags. We had a conference championship and two sweet sixteen runs and any Ag who was rooting against us during that time, I truly feel bad for you.
But did I think Billy was God’s gift to basketball? No. We had very defensive centric teams with absolutely nothing going on offense. No sets, no movement, completely uninspired. We were never going to go any further than we did. Billy was a great recruiter (yes, Billy, not the assistants) and deserves credit for that, but that’s where most of the success came from.
Long story short, I hope you all enjoyed the debates I stirred up and hopefully it increased your interest in our basketball teams a bit. Here’s to hoping we make a great hire.

But how awesome would it be to hire Texas Tech's basketball coach??

Part of what allowed Billy Gillispie and Mark Turgeon to be successful was how difficult they made it to win at Reed Arena.
From November 2004-March 2011, A&M lost a grand total of 15 games at home. That included a postseason loss to St. Joseph's in the final round of the 2005 NIT prior to Madison Square Garden.
14 regular season home losses over SEVEN YEARS is an impressive home record, especially for a program coming off Melvin Watkins.

A pretty poignant bit on sports analysis and commentary in general. The majority of it is ridiculous when viewed rationally.

Billy Kennedy never recovered from losing Steve Prohm his "OC" of an assistant, and to an extent Prohm has had struggling defenses as a HC in Iowa.

Always knew you had to be trolling. Do you feel free now?
