D has been better this year, but still nowhere close to a wrecking crew like in the 80’s and 90’s. Can chief make Kyle Field the valley of dread it once was or can we do better?

Chief's contract ends at end of the season. According to today's news, the new A&M coach will likely make that decision. That is, in the event Chief wants to remain in College Station.

This

Plus he still won’t have us in the top 50 of total defense after 3 years so I’m not sure where his “untouchable” status I see a lot of places comes from. Same with Jim Turner, 2 years in and our O Line looks just as bad as when Christiansen was managing it.

But it’s a moot argument, new coach is gonna bring in/retain whomever he wants.

I like the idea of keeping him and the other defensive of coaches, it may help keep recruiting together and then the new coach can make a decision next year once he's in place

Terry price is the defensive coach I'd like.to see us keep. Or maybe turner (defense) if he's the one who has done the scouting.for his position. Our dts have been developed well and the new guys look like they'll also be high end SEC caliber DTs

I just don't know how anyone can think that the new HC will keep any of the assistants. It is something that rarely happens, except when you promote from within.

exactly. a new coach isn't getting saddled with a previous DC. Plus, Chief hasn't really done anything worth 1.5 M.

Curious as to how the assistants contracts are written. I assume buy outs will be needed on all of them. How much?

If the new HC comes in and wants to keep Chavis, then we keep him. If not, we don't. Pretty simple IMO.

I do think there are some advantages to keeping him and some of the current staff but not enough of one to force him on somebody who might want a completely different kind of defense or just plain doesn't get along with him.

No buyout. Mazzone and Chavis both have their contracts run out after this season.

New coach will bring in his own DC. Steele from Auburn would be nice.

Agree with part 1. Feel like part 2 is out of left field. Am I missing a connection there?

For most games Chavis and our defense hasn't been the problem this year. They had a great first half vs UCLA and then just got wore out with shitty clock management and a barrage of 3 and outs by our own offense.

The only game where they didn't look much better out of the gate was Arkansas. Defense played well vs South Carolina, Bama, and Florida. Miss State had 14 at half despite our offense doing nothing and eventually pulled away. Auburn scored 14 on D in first half + blocked punt TD for 21. They eventually pulled away because we couldn't keep offense on the field. I don't feel like looking it up but over a 5 game stretch of SEC opponents after Arkansas I would guess we approached 25 3 & outs and a bunch of 4 or 5 and outs on top of that. Pathetic.

Not sure Ags have come close to winning TOP against anyone outside of Nichols, ULL, or New Mexico. Aggressive defense just gets worn out because of our inept offense. This might be our best defense since Sumlin's first year considering how shitty our offense has been.

Everything you said is spot on. Defense is not our issue this year.
