The growth of Calzada

Avg vs Colorado, Arkansas, & Miss St
53.2% Comp%
156.3 YPG
1.0 TD-INT

Avg vs Bama, Missouri, S Carolina, & Auburn
56.0% Comp%
203 YPG
2.3 TD-INT

He's still a long way from what we want, but he's developing nicely in front of our eyes. We've seen the ceiling (Bama). While I still think I'd take King over him, I gotta given credit where credit is due.

I wouldn't say that's a noticeable increase, 3% over so few games sounds like a statistical blip.

The real change I've seen has been from the offensive line. It's been a huge difference.

Calzada is who he is: a tough, gutsy leader who doesn't give up; but an average passer and no dual threat at all. He may get slightly better as time goes on, but we aren't at a level where we can start a guy who doesn't hit 60%-65% of his passes. If King can do that, he gets the start next year.

One of King/Calzada will end up transferring. Not sure which one. Weigman is the backup next year

3% C'mon Man.

He's upped his yards per game by 33% and improved his TD-INT significantly.

He did it vs two of the top defenses in the SEC, Bama & Auburn.

I'm not buying either part of this, as of now.

Calzada's sister just signed with A&M soccer, so that's a perfectly good reason for him to stick around even if he doesn't win the starting job. And I'm guessing Calzada is comfortable with his role as an interchangeable piece at the position.

Haynes maybe transfers, but I'm not certain he loses starting job. And I could definitely see him sticking with it even if he does, because I don't think Calzada is good enough to scare other QBs away.

And I would pencil Weigman in as the automatic backup. He looks really good, but it won't be easy to beat out a 3rd year guy and 4th year guy who both has starting experience. And if he doesn't fully commit to football (supposedly he's going to try to play baseball this spring), then he may not get the necessary reps to make up for the lack of experience compared to the other two.

What does it look like if you compare

1. Colorado, Arkansas, & Miss St
2. Alabama
3. Missouri, S Carolina, & Auburn

I would love to keep all 3. But I expect King to beat out Calzada. Calzada is good enough to play somewhere else and has plenty of eligibility. Maybe he sticks around next year to back up King. He can transfer midyear once King proves himself. Let Weigman focus on baseball early then take over after King leaves.

Calzada definitely looks better, but I think this has been the biggest difference, as well.

Also, the defense kinda let us down in the 1st half vs Arkansas and whole Mississippi State game. I think their improvement has allowed the offense to play much more within their abilities, run the ball, take a few chances here and there, but not have to make up huge deficits or go back and forth in a shootout. The offense showed it could do so vs Alabama, but I think that was abnormal and not sustainable week to week.

Hopefully we get another great defensive performance this weekend and the offense on needs 24-28 points to get a W.

He is, but I'm skeptical he could find another situation like ours, where he's one snap away from starting for a Top 10 team playing on the biggest stages in the country.

If I had to bet on a scenario, I'd guess he sticks around for his sis' freshman year as a backup QB, then goes somewhere as a grad transfer for his 5th year (if he wants one last starting gig before hanging it up)

I agree with this take, 3% isn’t much in that span, could just be an anomaly. But I do think he is playing slightly better as is our whole offense in general, but a lot of that has come from the line improving. Arkansas rushed 3 and gave us issues, Bama sent 4-6 a lot and protection held up. Calzada just needs to be a game manager at this point and not make bad mistakes, while making a few good throws when we need them. Outside of the Bama game he hasn’t thrown for over 200 yards.

Calzada reminds me of 1998 Randy McCown.
