Tom Herman Calls for Texas and Texas A&M to Resume Their Football Series

quote:

“In my perfect world, you would play one big-time Power 5 [non-conference] opponent,” Herman said in an interview with myself and former UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel on SiriusXM's ESPNU Radio on Tuesday. “To me, there’s a very logical one an hour-and-a-half east of us.”

That logical opponent is Texas A&M, the former rival that Texas has played 118 times but hasn’t played since 2011. That was the Aggies’ final season in the Big 12 before moving to the SEC.

quote:

New Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte, who was hired from TCU, has said he’d like to see the rivalry resume at some point. Herman’s desire to resume it, meanwhile, is as practical as it is sentimental.

quote:

Herman would like to see the series resumed, but earlier in the season instead of on its traditional Thanksgiving date. “Play Week 2 every year,” Herman said. “Don’t disrupt the conference schedule. Play a tune-up game. Then play your rival game two.”

quote:

Reached Tuesday by phone, Texas A&M athletic director Scott Woodward said the calls for the game aren’t anything new. Unfortunately for Longhorns and Aggies who would love to see the series resume, both schools are scheduled out for almost a decade. In an interview this spring, Woodward explained that at the moment, Texas A&M’s priorities are trying to figure out how to beat its new(ish) rivals in the SEC West. “I admire that [Texas is] a great [Association of American Universities] institution in my state,” Woodward said. “They have a great role, but they do what they do what they do. From an athletic standpoint, all my focus is east. I’ve got to worry about Auburn and Alabama and LSU. Frankly, that’s where my focus is.”

To Herman, you do not tell A&M when and how the game should be played bitch and for that Woodward

I'm one of the few in favor of playing the sips every year, but that's a really, really nice response by Woodward.

"That's nice of them to bring us up, wanting to play us, and I think they are just great, but we already have LSU, Alabama, and Auburn on our schedule [pssst...they don't! they play Iowa State and whatnot!] and that's where our focus is. Maybe we'll be able to answer their call soon and get them on the schedule in a decade or so."

That's what happens when it becomes clear you aren't going to have a recruiting edge in the foreseeable future unless you play us.

While it would be great to play them again...I hope we don’t for the foreseeable future as it only benefits them in terms of recruiting/quality of opponent. Since they play OU at the Cotton Bowl... their home schedule truly sucks. Yes, they may have an easier path to the playoff series...but if kids want to go pro or play the best competition ... it’s not by going to a BDF conference team.

Let 'em catch us in the postseason if they're good enough. Starting up another annual business deal with them they'll just renege on when it benefits them? frick that.

I thought I'd miss the game a lot more than I do. Honestly only the nostalgic part of me misses it. I enjoy the games vs. SEC opponents far more than I miss the entire season centering around the t.u. game.

I find it interesting that he admits their home schedule sucks and that is why he wants to schedule A&M. Sips are usually more underhanded about their intentions, I bet sip boosters hate him admitting we can help them.

Also talk about a program that has had one backfire after another this decade- LHN, blackballing us hurting them, trying to hire Saban, hiring a black coach to copy us, etc.

Why would we extend a helping hand to our biggest recruiting rival, especially when they were public about blackballing us when we left the conference we once shared?

They’re the ones who need a more interesting, tougher schedule. We don’t have either problem. All this would do is drive interest in their program and increase the difficulty of their schedule, wheras it is currently weak and boring - particularly since they play OU at a neutral site - making their home schedule uninspiring by their own admission, while ours is stupendous.

This would be like if someone broke into your house and you said “here’s a gun to shoot me with”. Or if you gave your high producing accounts to a coworker so he could get a bigger bonus. It doesn’t make logical sense for A&M.

I don't want to get into that argument. I understand why most folks think what they think. I might be wrong.

But college sorts are about rivalries, and I think we'd kick their arse every year and the game would just cement our status as the top school in the state, and we'd make a lot of money and get a lot of exposure from the game.

I understand the concern that doing so helps them with recruiting by helping solve their schedule problem. That makes sense, too. I get it.

Perhaps because we haven't been in the SEC even a decade yet, but every weekend game against ANY SEC opponent still feels like a bowl game used to.

Let the sips stew in their own mess for a while. Perhaps we will play them again, and it will likely be an early season game, but that time isn't now. They don't get special attention; they are just another OOC in which we schedule out many years in advance.

Herman should be worrying more about all his former players talking shite about him, and less about A&M.

Former Texas S DeShon Elliott blasts coaching staff for ‘bad mouthing’ juniors who left early

quote:

Former Texas safety DeShon Elliott blasted the current coaching staff on Wednesday because he believes the staff is “bad mouthing” him and other juniors who chose to leave school early.

“I’d really appreciate it if anyone on the current staff at the University of Texas Football team besides (safeties coach) Craig Naivar, (cornerbacks coach) Jason Washington or (quality control coach) Kyle Coats would keep my name out of there mouth and continue to bad talk me or any other junior that decided to leave early,” Elliott tweeted.

“We lead your team the best we could before making a decision to better our families. Which I believe you would do the same,” he added.

Former All-American left tackle Connor Williams also left early as a junior after last season. He became a second-round pick with the Dallas Cowboys. On Elliott’s thread, Williams tweeted, “I hear you brother.”

quote:

“If you really ‘loved’ your players the way you portray then you wouldn’t continually talk bad about them behind closed doors,” Elliott continued his Twitter stream. “Bad mouthing us to our brothers who we played for and cried and sweat for way before you stepped on campus.

“Kept my mouth (quiet) about this, it’s the complete opposite of my personality but it has to come to an end. It’s been a continuous thing for far too long. – Da Joker.”

DeShon Elliott’s Twitter rant was sparked by Texas coaches’ reaction to a July 4 party

quote:

Elliott held an Independence Day pool party in Austin, and multiple current Longhorns players attended. Some members of the coaching staff later found out about the party and warned players not to associate with Elliott, a source familiar with Elliott’s thinking told the American-Statesman.

There is also some talk that the juniors who left were told that Herman spoke poorly of all them to NFL scouts before the draft and they are not happy about it.

quote:

Jane Slater @SlaterNFL
He’s not alone in this sentiment...heard rumblings of this ahead of the draft.if true, be better Texas
