Duke got themselves a new head coach.

It’s been a good ride. Best of luck to him.

It was always a forgone conclusion, wish we got to hang onto him another season or two. Best of luck, I think he will be a good HC.

Hope this doesn’t mess with our recruiting.

That's my only worry right now. I think we will get a good DC. Want our recruits to stick

Get the check book out and find the next guy, knew it was a matter of time before Elko took a HC job. I'd be a lot more worried if other teams weren't trying to poach our coaches. Need to move fast, like by Monday fast to keep recruits from listening to other schools talk shite.

Unpopular opinion, but I would have absolutely no issue if Tim DeRuyter was snatched away from Tech just for shits and giggles. He's one hell of a coach and worked miracles in his two seasons here under Sherman. Sherman couldn't hire a competent S&C coach, so we never got to see Tim DeRuyter's full potential.

Or if not, just hire Boom and get it over with.

I guess he just likes the triangle. What a terrible career decision - Duke is bad. Keep Robinson, and most of the assistants

And don’t think for a second Jimbo hasn’t been planning for this all year, he has, we’ve all known deep down inside this was going to happen eventually

Before he got to A&M, his P5 coaching stops were Wake Forest and Notre Dame. He went to Penn. The assumption was that Elko was going to wait for the right opportunity. It's just that no one stopped to consider that, for him, that means being at a high academic private in a nice place to live. I think he will do well there and be a really good fit with their culture.

I would rather promote E-Rob than retread Muschamp, Mason, or DeRuyter. I be intrigued by Patterson because he was one of the originators of the 4-2-5 we use. But I doubt he is a good enough recruiter to be on this staff.

We are in a league where we should not be using our coordinator positions to provide on the job training for brand new coordinators. I don't know who the right hire is but that person should have extensive coordinator experience against teams that provide a high level of competition. That person should also have good interpersonal skills to mesh well with the existing staff. We have plenty of money in our assistant coaching staff budget to pay experienced coordinators well.

I don’t know. Fisher tends to hire those who give him a hard time on the field. There are several names that come to mind because of that but would love to see Arnett from MSU. At the very least Robinson will be promoted to co-DC

Georgia did it with Dan Lanning, and Clemson with both Jeff Scott and Tony Elliott on the offensive side of the ball. Heck, Notre Dame did it with Clark Lea after Elko left there. If we only had a top 50ish defense, maybe I would be looking to trade up. We have had uncanny coaching stability since Jimbo got here. Given our results under Elko I would value continuity in scheme and terminology over play calling experience.

I think Arnett has only run 3 man fronts. Hard to see us hiring someone like that

Derek Madon would be a phenomenal hire. But I am sure that whoever it is will be good.

The best coordinators have a good feel for the game to decide when to send pressure, when and how to disguise coverage, etc. You don't know if brand new coordinators have it or not until you see it.

You can find exceptions to the rule like you mention. It probably works out better, but is no guarantee, if the head coach specializes on the side of the ball where you are breaking in a brand new coordinator like at Georgia.

I do not want to see a repeat scenario like what we had with Sumlin where he greatly contributed to the failure of his tenure by successively promoting brand new offensive coordinators that had no business getting their first coordinator job at an SEC school. There were obviously other strategic errors that were made but he did not help himself in any way with his OC promotions.
