I can't help but think Sumlin's "no hurry, right hire" rhetoric plays into Foster's December 31st annuity deadline. If he's confident or already has a deal and is communicating that to recruits then we may be in the dark for a few weeks.

If we got past Malik's announcement then I'd feel very confident about Foster being it. There can't be any even semi-official announcement before the 31st or VT would fire him in order to avoid the payment.

What I read from VT pay sites is that Foster has new contract, but he just hasn't signed it yet. That to me screams...

IANAL, but I can't believe that's correct. Taking another job after your current contract isn't a reasonable cause to be fired. I think they'd still be on the hook.

If it really is Foster, I'm beginning to think we won't know until January.

If that plays out I would be very worried that something goes south and then we are in a real pickle so late in the game.

It would suck if he tells Sumlin he will take the job, and then on December 31st, he has a change of heart.
By then, every good coordinator would be taken up.

At the same time, you don't want Sumlin to "settle" on someone either. But waiting that long would definitely not be cool. If Foster is the guy, then awesome but to let him mull it over for a month......frick that.

No way Sumlin waits without knowing 100% if Foster is taking the job. He's either going to take the job soon and negotiate part of the bonus / miss out on it or wait to accept *wink wink* and accept the bonus.

Um, people need to stop playing internet lawyer
Retention bonuses are a means to retain employees but they cannot legally prevent you from seeking employment elsewhere. You can sign a contract today for a job starting at a future date. And accepting an offer elsewhere is not grounds for termination as it would be deemed reasonable notice at this point.
Really. Relax
