What do you and Texas Gentleman do?
I was actually asking about ConocoPhillips because they had an entry level position open up that I hope to get. Essentially the ad was for recent grads in International Affairs to help inform them on foreign policy shite that's going on around the world that might impact their operations.
I know the oil industry has taken some real hits recently but if I can combine what I love to do and research (int. affairs and foreign policy) with private sector / oil industry money?

I haven't heard great things about Conoco as a workplace compared to other majors. I know a couple folks who worked there and they always described it as extremely stuffy and that they overly complicate everything (even by large company standards). These were in different business units though and your job would be pretty outside the box so that might not apply.
Economically they're extremely solid though. They had some cuts like everyone else, but in O&G they're about as stable as it gets outside of Exxon and Chevron
Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm kind of surprised that's a position they're keeping as it seems like the type of position a company would cut pretty quickly when times get bad. It does sound very cool though.

Maybe they just need us types to make sure they don't step in any doodoo given they're already in hard times.
On a serious note, who has been taking the biggest hits? Has it been the guys out in the oil fields themselves?

Service companies (Halliburton, Baker Hughes, Schlumberger, NOV, etc) are always the first to cut, not the producers. They've all made massive cuts and it might not be done. There are thousands and thousands of service companies too that fill different niches that are much smaller than the four I named, and they've all made huge cuts or gone belly up.

I work in Project Controls, specializing in Capital Projects and Turnaround Only, I do not work with the maintenance stuff. I am on the financial side, establishing budgets, forecasting, estimating, controlling the cashflow etc. I like the job, the money is great, and I always have a little time off between jobs (usually).
I am a contract worker so I do not work for a big company, I work at big companies facilities but not directly for them.

I'm a risk management consultant for agricultural markets that helps farmers hedge production through the commodity markets. I'm not tied to O&G at all, but I have a series 3 license which allows me to trade on the NYMEX as well so I keep an eye on energies but most of my work is with agricultural commodities like corn, cotton, cattle, etc.
Yeah I'll just echo what's already said ConocoPhillips is about as solid as they come, a lot of big companies have foreign affairs analysts if they have to do business in a lot of countries, but as Shane said I would see that as a fairly early position on the chopping block if the industry is going through tough times. It sounds like a cool position so if you were interested I'd definitely check it out and apply.
