You can have 2-3 deep of 4-5 stars and they all seem to be a weak point for every team.

They have to develop as a unit. You can't plug and play an O line.

I’d trade Auburn’s Oline for literally any other Oline in the SEC and be happy

In the old day you had big *ssed farm boys that were strong as ox's from the work and well fed so they were big. Takes a certain mindset to farm. Takes a certain mindset to be a O lineman. I bet a generation ago a Venn diagram of this intersection was MUCH bigger.

Look at Nebraska before 1980

5 deep at walk-ons (big farm boys who dreamed of playing for Nebraska)

Can’t really speak from a football standpoint but I am good at grappling and you fully mature as a wrestler or BJJ guy at 35-45 years old. These OL are 6’5” 300+ pounds trying to basically grapple and stop ultra athletic freaks that are pretty much the perfect age for their craft at 22-24 years old.

IMO the NFL has way better o line play because a lot of the DL have lost a little of their youthful aggression and burst and the OL is closer to peak old man strength at that point.

So your serious answer is “because they aren’t farmers”.

It’s a byproduct of the transfer portal. You can’t just throw five big guys together and expect them to operate as a unit immediately. It takes time for cohesion to develop for an offensive line. It’s not like the “skill” positions where all you have to do is learn a new scheme and terminology.

This is why offensive line play has deteriorated so much over the last 5-6 years. And until they fix the transfer portal, it’s not going to get any better. In fact it will probably get worse. And yes, it’s hurting the game.

Rosters are as thin as they've ever been

19 yr olds cant develop because 120 teams are texting second string dudes telling them they can be all conference on another team...and theres no repercussions buying into that bullshite

I can't believe someone that just knows the hell out of the position can't teach atleast a formidable offensive line. If a team has a stud defensive lineman they basically seem helpless

It's not knowledge, it's trust that the guys on either side of you will get the assignment right. No trust, you hesitate. And the linebacker goes by.

Again, it’s not just a matter of learning the position in the same way it is for receivers, running backs, and quarterbacks. Offensive linemen have to work together as a unit. As I pointed out earlier, unit cohesion is vital to an offensive line. Without it, no amount of talent can help.

And offensive line cohesion is something that takes time, like seasons, to establish. And, thanks to the transfer portal, it’s almost impossible to build any cohesion on the offensive line now.

You can’t teach cohesion, it has to be developed. And the only way to develop it is guys working together as a unit over time. The transfer portal has made it all but impossible for a compete o-line to work together long enough to gel as a unit.

Yeah if you are an old Mizzou fan, you saw it in front of you at games.

These walkons had heart and size, and no dreams of a pro career, just a chance to play for Big Red in college.

I think they are getting to big, as in fat not muscle.

I would take a 265 pound tackle who can bench 350+ for reps over a 300 pound one that cannot bench 350 even once....
