A comment in another thread brought this to my attention.

Currently, a low 3* (Joseph Evans) is all LSU has committed on the DL this class. I know Sopher was thought of top target for LSU, but he looks to be trending away.

Who else is LSU targeting? Who's likely? Are yall getting worried?

Isn’t their head coach a DL coach? What gives?

The had a shite load of DTs in last years class. They can probably afford to go light there, but maybe not so much at end.

We're a bit all over the place, but we took a decent bit of DL last class (5 initially, 3 that stuck to DL, 2 moved to OL right now) and 2020 is full of defensive linemen (3 4-stars we are wanting to take in state alone). Goal is probably to get 2 MAYBE 3 this class.

Sophser is probably a long-shot but names keep popping up every day for a 2nd or even 3rd add. They are working on trying to flip Byron Young & Jaren Handy. Marcus Stripling may visit before he makes a decision (longshot). They are working Siaki Ika at NT. A couple more I'm just not thinking of right now.

Evans also isn't close to a low 3-star, so not sure where that came from. Dude is pretty good and we're excited about him. He was never going to get national pub because he didnt really do the camp thing and committed really early on.

There's also no senior defensive linemen on the team this year, so as of right now, not slated to lose any defensive linemen.

Not low 3... mid 3.

That tends to happen to guys who commit early and don't look around.

Who is Stripling trending towards? I'm pretty sure Jimbo and co put him on the back burner.

I'm on record that I would rather LSU burn two scholarships on the Sopsher brothers than have him go to Bama. While I never rule out Coach getting the best out of a guy, I have seen Sopsher play twice and came away very unimpressed. The last high recruit I saw in person and said this about was LSU signee Willie Allen.

87 composite and 88 on 247 that's more high 3-star range. Keep in mind a 3-star on 247 is 80-89 range, so low would be 80-82ish. Mid like 83-86ish, high 87-89ish. Can get a little more granular but he's definitely closer to high 3-star than low or even mid really. Can debate the 83/87 perhaps I would call 83 mid-low and 87 mid-high maybe.

No idea, crystal ball says OKlahoma and they are "Warmer" vs. everyone else warm at best so that's all I can go on.

I just know DL isn't a HUGE priority this class since we took 5 (again 3 ending up staying on DL) last year and they know we have a big in-state DL class for 2020. With no seniors and if no one really leaves the DL this year, it makes sense to take maybe just 2 in the end.

2020 LA class
As you can see there, 3 4-star DL for next year with 1 already committed in Roy. They are pressing hard for Guillory and we're certainly the favorite there. Jackson they offered but arent pressing hard right now. He is Joseph Evans' teammate at Haynesville (and holy hell at having 2 guys like that on a DL in high school). 6'3 305 and 6'5 271. We also had the #1 DT in the country for 2020 committed at one point in McKinnley Jackson, but he might be headed to Bama now, his coach is a HUGE Bama fan, posts on their forum...

As others have said it really wasn’t a priority in this class. Should keep the entire 2 deep intact going into next season and this upcoming recruiting class is loaded with good dlineman. One that’s already committed.

It's a little bit concerning. In 2014 and 2015 we didn't take a single DL, and that really hurt us in 2016 and 2017. Hopefully we can land another guy or two, so we don't face this again in a couple of years.

A couple of names that TB left out are Charles Moore and Nathan Pickering. Pickering was supposedly a silent, but changed his mind and committed to State. I'm not sure if the ship has sailed with him or not. He seems pretty solid, but you never know.

We took a lot of guys listed as DTs last year, but we run a 3-4 so guys like Jenkins and Cotton are probably going to be ends for us.

As for Stripling, I heard a lot about him early in the cycle, but it seemed like he either fell down our board, or we fell down his. It seems like we're circling back around to him though. We went in-home with him last week.

Metry, I would be extremely surprised if Rodney was still a take for us in a Sopsher package deal. I'm almost positive he didn't play any football this fall, and I'm not sure if he was even enrolled in juco.

It seems like Stripling in general trended downwards as a recruit and I’m not sure why. I think he’s really good and didn’t hear anything about him struggling this year. He will probably end being good somewhere.

I know where you were going with this, but factually it's not correct.

We actually took Godchaux, Clark, S. Teuhema, Valentine and Lealaimatafao in 2014.

Godchaux was a starter but left after 3 years. Clark wa s acareer lightly used backup. Teuhema was booted off the team. Valentine never made it academically after enrolling and redshirting. Lealaimatafao was booted off the team.

In 2015 they signed nobody, presumably because they took 5 guys the previous class, unfortunately only 1 of those 5 worked out at all, and only 2 were on the team for more than 2 years.

In 2016 we got out and get Lawrence, Alexander, Logan, roddy and Valentine (JUCO). Lawrence, Alexander and Logan worked out well for us. Roddy switched to TE and then left, where as Valentine, once again, academically couldn't make it.

Right now, we look good for next year, here's the depth chart I have:

DE
SR. Lawrence
rSR. Fehoko (plays NT also)
rJR. Logan
JR. Farrell
rSO. Thomas
rFR. Jenkins
rFR. Cotton
FR. Evans

NT
SR. Alexander
rSO. Shelvin
rFR. Livingston

That's 11 guys for 3 spots, really quite deep. I'd like to add 1 more Dlineman this class, because we do lose at least 3 next year between Lawrence, Alexander and Fehoko...but it's not the end of the world if we dont either, AT LEAST in the near term.

This is assuming Lawrence/Alexander and Fehoko come back, any of the 3 could declare, never know these days.

I remember when LSU's DL used to scare the absolute shite out of me every year and Alabama's couldn't pass rush to save their lives.

I agree. We haven't been scary on D-line in a long time. I thought we would be a bit closer to that this year, but we didn't even come close. We have talented guys and some depth, but I really believe that Moffit bulked them up too much because they are all fat and slow. Most of our guys have a frame more like Q. Williams (except Shelvin and Alexander), and would be better suited at that 285-290 playing weight.

It's all cyclical. Hit on 2 classes and y'all will be right back to having that DL that we got used to.

I'm not sure Alabama can keep up what they're doing on the DL. They hit on an absurd amount of defensive linemen and went from frustrating to 40+ sacks these last 3 or so years.

Many of us thought this would be the year they fell of a bit but they've stayed healthy and Williams becoming a god at the position has allowed them to be great again.

Didn't know that Whitefoot, that would be a better development for LSU.
