Let me preface this by saying I have seen nothing regarding Alabama contacting him, but I was reading a 247 Sports article detailing the latest Bama Bumps and he was listed as another player who jumped tremendously in the rankings.

He's from Baton Rouge (Scotlanville Magnet) and apparently this was his first year playing football. Here's what the article says about him:

quote:

Jonathan Horton, DE, Baton Rouge (La.) Scotlanville Magnet – The Baton Rouge area prospect is in his first year of varsity football, opting to come out for the team as a senior. Horton and college coaches are surely glad he made that decision as the 6-foot-5, 215 has burst on the recruiting scene by way of a startlingly strong debut season. A shot-blocker on a top high school basketball team, Horton owns a 6-foot-11 wingspan and pairs that unique length with some twitchy athleticism to make plays off the edge and in pursuit. You'd never think Horton was new to football in watching him play–there's no hesitation to his game. He embraces contact and is typically the one who is doling out punishment. Horton has taken official visits to Virginia and Utah and has a trip to Baylor scheduled for this weekend. The high upside prospect earns his fourth star, moving into the Top247 at No. 219 overall.

Profile Highlights

Anyone watch this kid play? He seems like a good candidate to blow up after the Early Signing Period after teams reset their boards.

buddy has that mystery player profile pic. Scottlandville is the same school that produced Kelvin Joseph isn't it?

Yeah that’s where Joseph went. Scotlandville is arguably the roughest part of BR.

In regards to Horton, I have not seen anything on our boards about him. Seems to be out of left field.

Dang, I wish Desmond Little got that kind of bump when he had his 14 sack senior season

I coached against Horton this year. He's in the same district as where I coach. He's a very explosive player Scotlandville did a good job mixing him around moving from end to backer. His ball get off was one of the quickest I have seen. He has extremely long arms and did a great job using them to his advantage. He is very raw and could be an elite pass rusher early. Horton needs to learn how to fit gaps and play the run better but that will come with coaching and experience.

I’m from BR and this is the first I’ve heard of him. He may be on the LSU staff’s radar, but we have a lot of other elite lineman on tap.

did he play any offense against y'all? His measurables and background typically translate well to tight end

No he didnt play any offense for them. Im sure he could've if Coach Ricard wanted him to but they already had a 6-4 235 lbs. TE that was a grown man. Hes a very long lean guy with im sure good hands because of his basketball background.

I gotcha. These type of players always intrigue me. You look up in 3 years at a mock draft and some kid from Buffalo or UTSA is a projected top 10 pick, and you wonder how the hell he ended up there. At the end of the day it's impossible for these coaches to cover every square mile. Same applies to basketball really, look at Ja Morant

This kid is a beast. He is a late bloomer who has flown under the radar. No idea what his grades are like but he has the tools to be a starter at an elite program. He is definitely raw though. Looks like Baylor and Virginia have the edge. I'm honestly shocked more SEC schools haven't joined into the mix.

Little had 14 sacks!??!

Not to downtalk him or anything but when I was watching the camp drills he was so lost on football moves and what to do, clearly behind everybody else. I thought I understood that we took him after only playing a year or two max in football, he came from basketball that's why he is like 6'6 200 lbs.

I was just a little shocked dude had such a steller season, that's impressive.

Dayum

And Horton plays at a pretty decent school, athletics wise though right? I'm not that familiar with where he came from, even when we recruited Kelvin and Smart (basketball)

They are a basketball powerhouse. So he's probably a really good athlete in general with a high ceiling due to not having played football for very long.

The year that Smart and Joseph graduated, they also had a 6'7" LHP that was committed to Tulane. He got drafted and signed with the Rangers though. But yeah, Scotlandville puts out athletes.

They might after next week. I imagine someone is going to miss out on a pass rushing target and will be scouring film to see who can fill that hole.
