I was curious how heavily he was recruited? He shows offers from a lot of the powerhouses in the SEC but wondering how legit the interest was.

No one on here really talked much about him.

It's a shock that a true frosh made our two deep at WR.

I am hoping we can win some more recruiting battles in the South. 3 out of 4 instant impact frosh are from the South.

He never had interest in LSU due to the offensive scheme, but we recruited him.

He's a perfect fit for an offense like Oregon.

He was always a great camp performer but just decent gamer, so I'll be interested to see how he actually does on the field. He would put up crazy SPARQ numbers and insane camp performances then just kind of disappear at times on the actual field. GREAT athlete though.

It's a good victory for Oregon. Louisiana grows Merritt's on trees. Every year it seems there is a new athletic phenomenon coming from the boot.

Just in the last 5 signing classes you have these athletes with similar height and size and build to Merritt that all hail from LA. Most have done very well for their respected teams or are set to do well in the near future. Very few busts.

Trevon Reed (2010 Auburn)
Tyrann Mathieu (2010 LSU)
Morris Claiborne (2010 LSU)
Odell Beckham Jr (LSU)
Jarvis Landry (2011 LSU)
Terrance Magee(2011 LSU)
Landon Collins (2012 Alabama)
Tradavious White (2013 LSU)
Jeyrl Brazil (2013 LSU)
John Diarse(2013 LSU)
Ricky Jefferson (2013 LSU)
Noel Ellis (2013 A&M)
Trey Quinn (2014 LSU)
DJ Chark ( 2014 LSU
Speedy Noil (2014 A&M)
Donte Jackson (2015 LSU)
Tyronn Johnson (2015 LSU)
Daylon Charlot (2015 Alabama)
Kirk Merritt (2015 Oregon)
Xavier Lewis (2015 LSU)

I would have loved to get Kirk but he wasn't meant for LSU

We have Mattrell McGraw (2014 NOLA) on our roster as well. He had a great offer list but is languishing on the roster right now. He got hurt in fall camp last year, so that has hampered his progress.

I hope he is one that just needs to develop.

Thanks for all the responses. I am used to USC saying the offer wasn't commmitable.

No doubt...our db coach is from there and he is making inroads slowly. It's an embarrassment of riches.

A&M and LSU wanted him bad, although it was down to us and Oregon at the end due to scheme as others have mentioned. Guy's a stud. The Oregon brand is strong right now, so I'm sure you'll continue to nab some players from the SE

I thought he would end up in the backfield, is he playing in the slot or wideout? He reminds me a bit of Diarse, I thought he would be a RB too early in his high school days.

He is in the slot. Has very good hand too. I am not sure how much he will motion into the backfield.

I believe LSU liked him at Safety. He had a very quick rise in the rankings, similar to Donte Jackson, once he started hitting the camps and showing off his athleticism.

I still remember when he was relatively unknown, think it was his dad that started posting on the recruiting board, linking film and stuff like that.

Neal, our db coach, wants him bad at safety. He said Merritt is a football player. On special teams he is first one down to make the tackle. These kids love offense but they can get paid on defense.

Neal got Ty Griffin (brother of Taj) to flip to defense. Ty is almost as fast as Taj but 205 pounds. We're starting to collect some elite athletes in the back end.

We definitely wanted him and recruited him hard. I think he would have come here if it wasn't for Oregon

Think we recruited him, but I don't recall him ever having much interest.

This. I watched him play live a couple of times and I didn't think he was even the best player on his team let alone the field at most points. He excels with vertical speed and was a workout warrior but im not so sure he was a gamer. It'll be interesting to see how he does with players who are just as fast as him.

He excelled in camp. This Wr core is deep and he is playing as a true frosh. Sounds like a quiet kid that works hard and does all the right things. Talented, hardworking and good locker room kid is the beat on him.
