Has NIL killed the 85 scholarship limit?

So... last off-season when asked about the total amount of NIL money players got, Kirby Smart from UGA said he was more interested in the number of players who had NIL deals and that 95 UGA players got NIL money... including guys like walk on safety Dan Jackson who got enough NIL money to pay for his school, room and board.

In thinking about that... does that mean that the 85 scholarship number is essentially moot now? If boosters can get NIL money to pay for college, can't teams effectively get good "walk ons" who are guys who might get a scholarship at a AA or G5 school and simply pay for their education outside the scholarship system?

I remember talk about how big teams before the scholarship limit used to recruit guys to stash on their bench to simply keep them from other teams. Could similar things happen now? Obviously not with the best players, but rather with depth pieces.

85 scholarship players 125 total I think, so yeah I guess you could have paid players without a scholarship. What a mess.

Yes definitely. We’ve signed a few preferred walk ons who had fbs scholarship offers.

It won’t ever be like it was back in the day, but it’s a way for some teams to build more depth in the transfer portal era.

Yes, LSU has 35 or 36 commits this year. Have to believe some of them are on NIL scholarship

Yep - this is something I was thinking about the other day. Could have an even bigger impact in something like basketball.

I don't think so.

Today's rosters are bloated w/ the Covid "super seniors" who got another year of eligibility. This bubble will work its way through the system.

I think transfers is a bigger issue. You can't stop people from leaving, and you damn sure can't make come if they don't want to.

LSU had a 77 man roster for 2022

So while it’s 35 and on paper looks like BK is channeling his Houston Nutt, it’s really only 2 over from a normal recruiting year due to so many counting back.

I think more-or-less, yes. I've also wondered to what extent the players getting NIL money are reporting it for FAFSA and how that affects scholarships.
